Umm, that's the minimum salary for this season.

One-way. Hathaway should get a two-way. He has not shown he deserves to play in the NHL full time.

But you know that's not what one-way means. He can still be sent down, and who cares what he makes in Stockton?

There are 14 forward roster spots on an NHL team. Plus, there is at least one injury for the vast majority of the 82 games.
I would rather have Hathway as the 14th forward than Foo or Mangiapane, because they need to play. If they can make the top 12, great. If not, they should be in the A.
Hathaway? A perfect candidate to pass Brouwer the butter.

I assume ownership does, but if they don't mind paying him 650K to play behind Foo and Phillips in the A, I won't be bothered.

Who would you rather eating popcorn as the 13th/14th forward? Seems like Hathaway would be pretty ideal for that.

ideally, a prospect is in our top 12 allowing Lazar and Brouwer to fill the press box. Either Mangiapane-Ryan-Frolik or Frolik-Ryan-Foo as our 4th line.

At the end of the day, no matter what the combination is for the 4th line and 13th/14th forward, it is clear that Brouwer must go....

You’re right. A $4.5M replacement level forward is a terrible thing. Honestly, if I had a magic wand, I would just bring back Nick Shore (young, defensive-minded centre) for like $750K and undo Brouwer and Hathaway’s contracts. I’d then send Lazar to the AHL and let Shore, Mangiapane, Foo, Czarnik and Dube fight like dogs for the wings on the 4th line. I’m guessing the lines would end up like this:
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Neal
Bennett - Ryan - Frolik
Mangiapane - Jankowski - Czarnik
- Shore - Foo
Here, I send Dube to the AHL for a developmental year.
Sadly, I think Brouwer is here to stay because next year his buyout will cost 1/2 as much. Hathaway is not necessarily going to be around because his salary will be under $1.025M so he can be sent down to the AHL without affecting the salary of the NHL Flames.

You can't just make 4.5M go poof

Lazar has a higher upside than Hathaway and is younger. He’s not an ideal candidate at all to be sitting the majority of the time. Hathaway makes much more sense to sit.

Just buy out Brouwer NOW!! People are worrying that the extra year of buyout cap spread of 1.5 mil is going to handcuff the team (1.5 x 4 years cap hit if he is bought out now vs 4.5 salary + 1.5 x 2 years cap hit if he is being bought out in 2019), basically it is just an extra year of 1.5 cap hit but you save 3 mil cap space this year, plus the Flames will save 1.5 mil in real cash. Can't understand why the Flames won't just cut him loose right now. They think they can trade him to a contender needing forward depth? Don't kid yourself...

Don't they have to wait until after arbitration?

I still wish they didn't qualify Hathaway at all. I like the guy but he's just not quite good enough

He's fine when he really brings the energy, but last year it wasn't often enough at all.

Latest date scenario, if the Hathway arbitration award comes down on Wednesday after this morning's hearing, is that the 48 hour buyout window opens Saturday. The sooner any settlement is reached prior to the arbitration ruling, the sooner the windout opens.
https://www.capfriendly.com/buyout-faq
"As explained in Section 13(c)ii of the Standard Player Contract (SPC) [Exhibit 1 of the CBA], clubs are permitted to perform a buyout outside the regular period during the 48 hour period beginning on the third day after the final of a) settlement of the Club's final arbitration case. b) receipt of the Club's last arbitration award."

Sure, I agree, but he needs to do it more than 8 games a year

How much cap do we normally enter the season on? Last year it seems like roughly 10% below the cap ($72m vs $79m).
Hard to imagine BT goes into season without some room.
