Canes sign Teuvo Teravainen to 5yr contract extension ($5.4 mil AAV)
Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Hurricanes have signed Teuvo Teravainen to a five-year contract extension worth $5.4 million AAV per season. He would have been RFA July 1.

Is there any influence from this deal on a Tkachuk deal?
TT outpaced him offensively last year, MT blows past him this season.
Interesting deal.

Pretty good deal. Almost as good as Lindholm's.

Yeah this is a good contract for Carolina.
64 points last year, on pace for 67 this year.
Really should have gotten at least $6.5M based on the closest comparables.

This is the first of a big number of RFA deals that will be signed before next season, including Tkachuk’s. It is not directly comparable, but it certainly will be in the pool of deals that agents/management will draw from when hammering out deals for Auston Matthews, Patrik Laine, Brock Boeser, Mitchell Mariner, and Braden Point.

Tkachuk at this price would be insane value. Personally, I'm expecting him to become our highest paid player but Brad is pretty good at these RFA deals

Hurricanes wanted Teravainen extension (five years at $5.4m) done before potential Ferland trade to establish they’re willing to spend money on reasonable long-term deals. Ferland appears committed to testing July 1 market, which is entirely his prerogative.

Very team friendly contract. Maybe they will be able to afford Ferland after all.

This seems low, especially since it buys 3 UFA seasons too.
Good job by Waddell.

Yeah im not suggesting MT signs for anything this low, but this should have "some" influence on the number as they talk.
Makes me more hopeful they can keep him at/under the "Gio cap".

Wow, that's a really good deal from Waddell. Teravainen is an excellent player.

Ferland is a 20 goal 40 point player who will be overpaid in the summer because he has been played with some very good players. He is exactly the type of player imo who will get a big deal and then just fade away (kind of like Brouwer).
Seems like a good guy though so hopefully he gets his money, just glad its not with the Flames.
As for this deal deal, very well done by the Canes.

Powerplay Quarterback

This will be Teravainen's second contract after his ELC. He had already signed a bridge deal 2 years ago, so I don't think it would be comparable to Tkachuk's impending contract.
Either way, pretty good deal for Hurricanes.

I'm really glad it happened of course, but why the hell did Waddell make the Lindholm/Hanifin trade? Trading away 2 solid players on cap friendly long term deals for a soon-to-be UFA and a defenceman who has never found a good fit in 6 years in the NHL. He must be praying to the hockey gods that Fox turns into an all-star, otherwise he'll be remembered as a GM in the same breath as Milbury and Chiarelli

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
He was acting on behalf of the owner who wanted to send a message that he would not overpay for talent. Instead he let 2 premiere players go and ended up (or will end up) paying the same if not more for other players.

Seems he already accomplished that by signing two guys long term on great deals. The trade still makes zero sense from a Canes perspective
