He was putting up $150M, but he's suing for $700M?
He said he would put up $150 million but it sounds like the further things got along in negotiatons the more people involved were worried he didn't have the money or wasn't going to live up to his end of the bargain. Maybe that was his plan all along to try and sue his way into getting the money needed to build the arena. The guy is such a weasel.

I can't imagine he can sue for the arena cost more than he had invested... can he?
I wouldn't put it past this guy to walk this path, but I have to think it was a plan set to fail from the outset.
I read one of the headlines too fast and thought Melynk was trying to sue for the entire cost of an area. Like, hey, no problem guys I just sued for the whole thing! No city money needed!
The problems in Ottawa are 100% owner based. Having the same owner in Quebec City won't solve a damn thing
It's not a great market by any stretch, but most any other owner would likely be a lot more successful than Melnyk is. It's a bit like Chicago in the days of Bill Wirtz...no one talked about moving the Blackhawks because of lousy attendance...they day he died, the team was instantly better and surprise, surprise...people in Chicago would support NHL hockey.

I think Ottawa should have a team - 5th largest city in Canada.
One hurdle there is that so many people in Ottawa are fans of the Habs, Leafs and other teams. All my cousins there (in 40s and 50s) cheer for other teams. It could take another generation to overcome this.
Stop sucking and they switch quickly. I'm sure it took some time here as well.

That's surely part of it, but they haven't been that bad. Far more playoff wins than the Flames since the lock-out. Our market is a bit different - 12 year head start on Ottawa, and geographically isolated from other NHL teams.
[QUOTEAs Complete Hockey News documented via Twitter, the Senators apparently wanted to get fans pumped during warm-ups prior to Thursday's game against the Chicago Blackhawks, and so they decided to drop "weird, heavy beach balls" onto the crowd from the arena rafters. As others reported, the results weren't pretty: Spilled beers, injured children and "people getting whacked left and right."][/QUOTE]

Just sell the team to the Quebec group and move them to QC. Team will still be close to Ottawa for the few fans that want to follow. That area is mostly all Leaf and Habs fans anyhow.

I'm pretty sure no one was suggesting Melnyk move the team. Quebecor has been trying to get a team for years, it would be Melnyk getting what he wants - A buyer.
Ottawa is such a fickle city. Ottawa people will find any excuse to not go out. It's either too hot, too cold, too damp, too far to drive, their feet itch, etc... I love this city, but it's becoming a city of reclusive shut-ins. Even Canada Day this year was a huge disappointment for a city that prides itself on outdoor festivals.
There is nothing wrong with their current arena. It's a nice facility by most standards. It's not that far out of the way that if you like your team, you will make the drive. The city is also growing fast out that way and the population is increasing.
Yeah, for sure it would be nice to have an arena closer to the core, but it shouldn't be a deal breaker for a Canadian city. It's such a bandwagon city.

The AHL Wolves, with their team in suburban Rosemont, used to outdraw the Hawks in attendance.
