In the division the Sharks are now four points back with even games played; not a huge gap, but certainly a bit of breathing space opening up at the top of the division. Vegas is now seven points back with even games played making one wonder if this is becoming a two team race in the Pacific. The next closest Pacific team is Vancouver, who are 17 points back of the Flames.
Just an observation about this.

Vegas is as good a home team as anybody.

They are .500 on the road, but a stellar 15-4-3 at home.

They have played 27 road game, but only 22 home contests.

It is worth paying attention to them still I would think, as they play 10 of their next 15 at home.

Still a long ways to go.

More second unit stuff ...

interesting that 2nd units across the league have averaged 9.8 goals this season. That's it. The Flames had five coming into the game, but now have 8.

the average production rate is 1.13 / 60 minutes of powerplay time, or just over a goal an hour. Teams average three powerplays per game which is 6 minutes (if they don't score). Second units average 43% of the powerplay time in a game.

Have to wonder if it was a bit of hockey marketitis making the 2nd unit take some heat in Calgary. None of them are productive.

I think the main reasons the second unit was getting heat was that the first unit was doing so much better by comparison, and fans hoped that guys like Neal and Bennett could find some offence in their limited PP time to prop up lower ES production (especially Neal)

We find holes on the team to speculate about for trades, but I think we are so hyper focused on our team we don't realize that every team has holes.

The Flames do have the 2nd biggest disparity between first and second unit effectiveness. Edmonton is 1st.
