I think Monny's biggest problem is that "people" like their first lines to have flashy, speedy, play-driving centers and consistent, north-south, sniping wingers... and we have the opposite.

In other words, he doesn't have a problem. People do.

He was on pace to score 70-points this year, and is in the top-twenty of offensive production among centres in the past three seasons.

Let's put it this way: if Sean Monahan is your team's #2 centre then your team has the best centre depth in the NHL by a country mile.

The guy still goes out there gets his hands and wrists busted up, "never complains and no one notices", but keeps on producing. Easily underrated and underappreciated!

What he does well, he does better than most in the league. He has a deadly shot in tight and can finish plays with the best of the best. But I don't see a progression in the areas he's weak in, which is playing the body and possession of the puck. I've rarely seen him drive possession into the zone, or make a play off the rush. That seems to be exclusively Gaudreau's role on the line and that makes me worried about the progression of his game in the likely chance that him and Johnny won't be linemates forever, (or even in the near future if Bennett becomes the player we hope he'll be).

The larger red flag I see with Monahan is his lack of physicality on the puck and the boards. He has a very active stick and he plays hard, but he's a big kid and he should be outmuscling opponents and I've been pulling my hair out too many times watching him shrug off the contact and seeing the play go past him.

I really like Monahan and I think he'll be a big part of the Flames going forward, but their success is going to rely on how he addresses some important holes in his game.
I posted this 3 years ago at my peak of Monahan doubt.

I honestly can't believe how well he's responded and grown since that point. While his role never grew into driving the play, his tenacity and compete level have taken his game to the next level.

We really do have an absolute beauty here.

Good post. But the reason Monahan doesn't "drive play" is because Gaudreau does most of that on his line most of the time. It works. However, when Gaudreau has been injured, or when Gaudreau has been off (as he was in the 2017 playoffs) Monahan has proven perfectly capable of driving play in his own right. I think we should also be careful not to confuse what Monahan DOES do with what he CAN do. He truly is a terrific player.

Bump. Monahan! ^ 😂

This guy has been so under the radar this year. Behind Johnny Guadreau's incredible, Hart worthy all-star year.

Giordano's 35 year old who has a 1.04 ppg, "not an all-star" been out standing in both offensive and defensive categories, and is leading this whole team.

Matthew Tkachuk on pace for over 94 points and due for a ''7-8 million dollar contract''.

Lindholm the breakout star for the Flames this year?
Yeah he his. No one really expected him to be what he is right now. Really compliments his teammates in Johnny and Mony.

Speaking of Monahan.
https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/flames-...season~1586808.

Yeah this guy is a legit 4th liner. We should keep him for depth in the playoffs.
He deserves as much credit as the other guys leading this Flames team right now.

I love it.

He just suddenly appears out of nowhere, like "Oh look, here I am all alone in a really dangerous spot."

Gaudreau feeds him the puck. He just kinda shovels it in. No fancy snap shot, no toe drag, just like he's sweeping his driveway. Oh look, another goal for me.

He now has a reputation for being our most dangerous scorer and it's hilarious how consistently the above scenario still happens.

Don't look now, but Mony is top-10 in scoring. Only 4 GWGs though, so nothing to see here folks.

In the last 5 season Monahan is 12th in the entire league for goals scored. He has 141.

In that game time frame he is second in the NHL for game winning goals with 32.

https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/seas...ers-stats.html

Edit: Just to put into perspective how many game winners this man gets. in a 7 year time frame, that includes one year before he even played in the NHL, and he is still ranked 11th with 34. The man is clutch!

Ha, Ovechkin with 32% more goals than anyone else over the past 5 years according to that link. The guy is truly generational.

55% more goals than Monahan over that same time frame. Yikes.

We all laugh at the boring Sean monkier, and marvel how he can continue to go so overlooked and underrated.
I think that is his super power. He gets open in the slot so often because no one seems to notice him.

Yup. His numbers aren't quite as impressive but he is Luc Robatile / Brett Hull esque in his ability to find the soft spot in the defense and get open for shots.

Congratulations on 400 points Boring Sean Monahan!

Most games played and goals scored, and second most points by any player from the 2013 draft.

They mentioned on the radio that with Mackinnon and Monahan hitting 400, next up is Barkov who is sitting at 399. Next player after those three sits at 303 (Lindholm).

Monahan needs 12 goals for 200. I don't think he gets enough credit for being a hell of a player.
