Car2Go Coming- Edit: going Edit: In Soviet Russia, car share pays you! (lawsuit)
http://www.car2go.com/calgary/en/concept/
Its a car service that you can rent a car, and drop it anywhere on the street in the home zone. You use an app to find the one parked closest to one when you need a car. Pretty neat, and could be pretty convenient if it takes off here.
Rates:
Per minute$0.35 plus taxPer hour maximum$12.99 plus taxPer day maximum$65.99 plus taxPer km after 200 km per rental45 cents, plus tax

If the home zone was huge and they were plentiful, I could see cab companies losing a lot of business. Driving from the airport to my house would be $12 instead of $70 plus tip.

HOW DO I UNLOCK THE CAR2GO?
When you register with car2go, you will be given a special car2go member card. In order to unlock the vehicle, simply hold up your member card to the reader on the windshield. The reader will indicate the doors are unlocked so that you can quickly get in.
HOW DO I ACTIVATE THE CAR2GO AND WHERE IS THE KEY?
After you have gotten into the car, you will need to enter your personal code (PIN) into the touch screen, and also assess the cleanliness of the vehicle and confirm that it is not damaged. Once you complete those questions, you will be prompted to access the ignition key.
The ignition key is located to the right of the touchscreen. Remove it and insert into the ignition located next to the gearshift. Then simply start the car2go as you would any other vehicle.

Not sure how I feel about this. We already have Calgary Car Share, and this is one of those service where splitting the market really does affect quality of service.

Yeah, definitely makes sense to have one company with lots of cars than a bunch with only a few cars. When I started a thread asking about Calgary Car Share, the consensus seemed to be Calgary didn't have enough hippies and/or urban density to make this work. I think it would, but it would take a critical mass number of cars to take off.
Also, Car2Go has a $35 sign up fee compared to a $500 deposit for the Calgary car share co-op, which should make it easier for them to get members. I'll probably sign up if it seems like they have a decent number of cars, even if it's just to run errands from work over lunch.
Does anyone know how many cars they're starting with in Calgary? The home area where you can drop them is pretty large, so if they all end up at the university or in Lakeview it won't be much use.

Looks like Car2Go is owned by Daimler, which means they have the $$ to start with lots of vehicles if they want to. Vancouver launched with 225, and they added 100 the second year.
Their website currently shows zero availability in Calgary, I wonder when they're going live.

There is 4 or 5 of them parked in the impark lot by 10 Ave and 6 St SW; wonder if they pay the impark fees?
They are all smart cars?

I just signed up with this code, but I found it here: http://www.hybridcars.com/news/car2g...ami-47070.html where they indicated 30 minutes of free drive time. Good deal either way, it launches July 21st.

Sounds like Daimler owns it and uses it partially to market the Smart "ForTwo"

I wonder what happens when two people show up at the same time for the same vehicle. Battle to the death?

Welcome to 10 years ago everywhere else, Calgary.
Just kidding, this is a great thing. Just wish it was Zipcar...as I have a membership with them.

How do they refuel these cars? When the fuel gauge reaches low, it's up to you to refill/recharge?

If it's anything like Zipcar, you're asked to fill up the car once it reaches a certain level. It's free though, as they include a credit card in the car. It's pretty easy....just a little annoying to have to do.
