I’m all for Vilardi but if it costs Hanifin I say no thanks. Would rather add something to Valimaki. They drafted only a few spots apart.

I know it’s the popular thing to turn on Valimaki right now but he will end up being better than Hanifin IMO.

Sure. I clearly agree the deal is nowhere near fair value, even if you are being generous to Monahan's value...
I don't think it's that low, but I also don't think he's the top priority to move.

The problem with this is it puts the other team in the driver's seat. They could lay some groundwork to sign him as UFA if they can't trade for him at a low enough cost.

I’m high on Valimaki too but I’d give him up for Vilardi.

No chance. His ceiling is 2nd pairing.

Valimaki can still easily be an excellent NHL D, but he doesn't have the skills that Hanifin does.
Of course some lesser skilled defensemen are better than Hanifin by virtue of positioning, reading the play etc. so there is hope I suppose.

So a 47 game set has made it absolutely clear that his ceiling is that of a 2nd pair dman?
Before this season we all figured he could be a top pairing guy.

Exactly who is 'we'?
How many games did he play before this season?

CP as a collective is ‘we.’
He played 24 games in 18/19 so he has played 71 regular season games to date with 2 playoff games under his belt.

Rookie Dman who had a full year off...I don't really think its fair to say what his ceiling is

Hanifin was very raw at Valimaki's age.

Hanifin signed a six year $30 million contract at 21. Valimaki is now 22.
Hanifin miles ahead of him at the same age IMO. He’s less than two years older.

Even Mark Giordano was pretty much a top 4 guy until the Iginla/Bouwmeester trades.
Perhaps the Flames just need a bunch of young top 4 options and then hope that 2 of them grow beyond that.
I have basically no idea what Valimaki's, Andersson's, or Hanafin's ceilings are.
But it's good to have three stabs at the can. And it would be nicer to have one more (Mackey might have top 4 potential as well, but I'm doubtful about him being top 2).

You’re correct on that one-I get Vilardi mixed up with Joe Veleno, when thinking about certain aspects of their skillsets.

Hall is actually playing well in Boston...Koskinen though, would rather not help the Oilers

That's because the organization may have overrated him. I think he's going to have a decent NHL career but I don't know if he has top pairing skills and I think the organization were of that belief. I don't think he's a bust as outside of the Flames most talent evaluators had him pegged as a good but not great prospect.

More then anything I want to know when Hanifin became a #1 pairing D! I guess if he's on your 1st D pairing you have the issues the Flames do.
Tanev and Hanifin are an elite 2nd pairing D. Our problem is we won't have a top pairing
If they are your top pairing you have all sorts of issues unless your other D are super specialized (IE - 2 Amazing offensive D elsewhere)
Flames REALLY bet on Valimaki and Andersson being better then they were this year. But they are young so fingers crossed.
