In a game full of terrible calls (both sides), that one was by far the worst. No infraction of any kind. Two minutes for hitting?

Calgary needs to start using Andersson's shot more. On PP2 it should flow through him on the backend.
And as good as Hanifin has been his numbers look awful. Two goals, no helpers and a -5 in seven games. Surprising because I've liked his game, but damn that's ugly.

A few notes being at last night's game:
1. The penalty on Hanafin was a joke.
2. If Andersson could get faster he could be stellar.
3. Bennett still having trouble controlling things in the offensive zone.
4. Johnny - geeze man in the third period get pucks deep, don't be turning and throwing it back towards our goal.
5. Ice was tilted in the third - playing with fire.

Sort of. While the Flyers held possession and were carrying the puck into the Flames zone most of the second-half of the third, it never felt like the Flames were in danger of allowing a goal. I thought they defended really well, kept them outside, and kept scoring chances to a minimum.

Hanifin
I really noticed Johnny turning the puck over a lot last night. Maybe he was forcing it, trying to make something happen excessively. Flyers?

So you’d prefer he didn’t work on getting better at his game? Practice makes perfect and puck handling can be a big asset to a goalie’s game. I’d prefer he continues to try and get better at it. He’s come miles since he first entered the nhl.

That Flyers team didn't show up last night, started their backup goaltender, and the Flames still had to hang on to the very end.

Backlund will be in the 45-50 point range come late March ... he always has a winding path to that finish.
But yeah the Flames aren't generating a lot of quality chances early in the season.

The ice was tilted towards the Flyers goal in the 3rd...Flames had way more high danger chances

I have really been enjoying the rhythm of the season so far. A game every second day will be good for this team gaining some momentum past the first ten games of the season.

Also, worth noting that there were two teams out there and obviously the Flyers were gonna make a push once they got within 1.

Flames still undefeated this season when Bennett plays under 12 minutes. Winless when he plays over 12 minutes. Keep him in the bottom 6!

I personally don't think it is an especially useful skill to have in the NHL. I mean, yes, goalies need to know what to do with the puck when they get it, and they need to be quick and decisive about it. That is what I want to see from David Rittich.
But what seems particularly inconsequential to winning is a goalie's individual puck skills, play, passing, movement, etc. In the time Mike Smith—an exceptional puck-playing goalie—was here in Calgary, there were a handful of times that his stick skills made a positive impact on the game, and also a few times where it cost the team goals. I also heard management and some of the players talk about how this skill minimized the number of times they took hits to make plays along the boards in the defensive zone. That all sounds good, but after the playoffs a poster on this site—I think it may have been Frank Metamusil—made a rather compelling argument for how Smith's puck-handling also had the unintended consequence of slowing Flames defensemen down in their own zone, and actually contributed to more passive play and turnovers. I went back and looked at the games with this thought in view, and I think he's right.
So, like I said: I don't think puck-play skills are all that valuable for a NHL goalie. Give me a goalie who makes simple, decisive, non-event plays with the puck every time, and I will be happy.

Let's hope. In his post-game press conference last night Peters said that Backlund would be evaluated this AM, and that he hoped the Flames dodged a bullet. He did not sound confident that Backlund was fine.

They had a close up of Backs on the bench when he returned last night and I thought I read his lips saying "frozen" or "froze it". Assume he was talking about his foot.
Practice right away so hopefully its good news.
Was this the same foot he blocked a shot with against Colorado that had him hobbled a few games?
Edit - And he isn't out there apparently

Im assuming once he got the skate off its foot, it swelled up significantly. And that probably didnt happen til post-game.
Probably why he isnt on the ice today.

One has to wonder had Kadri accepted the trade to Calgary what that would have done in regards to secondary offense. I imagine Peters may have put all the eggs in one basket and had him playing RW with Backlund and Tkachuk. I think that would have potential for a solid 2nd line.

Bennett....poor poor Bennett. Less then 9 mins of icetime and another minor penalty. Ah well, that 1 period he got in the top 6 is something I'll never forget.
