ARI signs Keller to 8 year extension (~$7.15 mil AAV)
Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
There is word that one of next year’s RFAs — Clayton Keller — is closing in on an 8-year extension with ARIZ. AAV is in the $7.15M range.

Really? How much must he love Arizona! Good deal for them with what is happening.
P.S. To add, I also wonder if this whole market adjustment is due to the fact that Matthews wants to play in Arizona ASAP?

That's a big domino. Arizona has the Keller/Schmaltz duo locked in for the foreseeable future.

I think that is a smart move by Arizona as they are banking that last year was just a down year for him.
If he returns to rookie season form then he should continue developing to a 65+ point player - which in the current RFA climate $7M for the full 8 years is unlikely.
Also not sure I get it for Keller to sign this year coming off a poor season. Have to think he could be leaving upwards of $10-15M on the table if he has a great season next year.
Not neccessarily great for the Flames though since based on production so far that probably moves an 8 year deal for Tkachuk to $9-$10M

To be fair, the closest prediction model out there always had Tkachuk at $9.5 for 8 years.

How can they afford this? Capfriendly shows them at $81 million. You can take out Hossa's $5.275 million, but this still puts them over. What am I missing?
And when did Arizona become a cap team?

Really? Once Aho signed his offer sheet I always assumed that Tkachuk would be in the $7.5–$8.5 m range on a five- or six-year deal. He was always going to get a lot more than that on a max-term contract.

This contract doesn't start until next season.

Hopefully this starts a cascade of RFA signings... or just Tkachuk, that’s all I care about. I still think we’re looking at a 5-6 year at around 8 to 8.5mil AAV.

Are you missing that this contract would not kick in until the 2020–21 season?

Yeah, in my mind Mark Stone's latest deal was the minimum base for a Tkachuk extension that runs 8 years.
9.5M or 10M AAV on 8 years seems fair for Tkachuk, and it's what I'm hoping for at this stage. Get him all sorted and in 2 years time, slap the "C" on his chest.

Looking back on this, I think a fairly simple case can be made by Keller's camp that he and Tkachuk are close to the same level. Keller has played only two full NHL seasons and has recorded 37 G / 112 Pts in 164 games (= 0.683 Pts/GP). In Tkachuk's first two seasons he scored 37 G / 97 Pts in 144 games (= 0.673 Pts/GP).
I think Tkachuk is a better player than Keller, but maybe the gap between them is actually pretty slim.

I think Tkachuk is a bit higher than this one, but it's probably moot because he's not signing 8 years. This is more comparable to Connor and Boeser than Tkachuk.

He is a center which is higher valued than winger so IMO that should come into play.
