All Is Quiet On the Flames Front - Too Quiet?
What's going on today? The team didn't make the playoffs and played just okay down the stretch but it looks like as far as the Flames are concerned everything is fine.
I would have expected some announcement and even minor changes like assistant coaches being fired.
Maybe it's coming but they have to change things for next season.
As per Elliot Friedman, this guy is available.

They went from horrible to mediocre
That’s good enough for many flames fans

Amateur scouting isn't the problem. Professional scouting seems to be.

Yeah, its not the Amateur scouting department thats the issue.
Pro scouting though needs a refresh/overhaul.

Would take a few weeks before the meetings are complete (I would think)
However I don't expect any news from the Flames unless a change is made
If that was to occur, next week is my guess
If not, it will be quiet until the expansion draft and amateur's draft approach

Yeah I suppose when making changes you have to be somewhat delicate and not rip everything apart as far as existing structure is concerned like scouting and all the work that's done with drafting and everything.
I must have missed Sutter's year end interview if there was one, but he doesn't say what's really on his mind though a lot of times. Like what is his opinion on his current assistants? I'm sure he gets along with them and all.

And thereis an unwritten rule that says everyone lay low until the playoffs are over.

The Flames have 12 amateur scouts and only 2 pro scouts.
One of those pro scouts (Loob) only looks at European pros.
So really, the only full-fledged North America pro scout is Steve Pleau.
And it should be noted, both the pro scouts and amateur scouts fall under the leadership of Button.
I would be surprised if the assistant GMs give Treliving a lot of the input that we would expect to come from pro scouts.

This should come as a surprise to no one who has been following the Flames for a while.

I doubt very much that this is a signal that "everything is fine." More likely, it is a signal that "the sorts of changes that need to be made cannot take place at this juncture, and will happen once the playoffs end."

Tre just entered "James Neal" into "Player stats" on NHL.com

Sutter did say the roster wasn't in the top 3 in the North Division, which could be taken as an indictment of the guy who put the roster together

Our director of scouting thought Jankowski was the best player in his draft year after watching him play a high school game
There’s definitely room for improvement. The scouting staff is essentially the same as the staff that botched three crucial drafts in a row for us from 2012-2014 which sucked the life out of our rebuild.
Our international picks have in particular been terrible. Removing the homer glasses you can’t like a single overseas pick
Feuk, Svenningson, Lindstrom, Kylington, Ollas-Mattson, Tuulola, Karnakhov. Could you get a 7th rounder back for literally all of them combined? Probably not, the best of the bunch just cleared waivers making league minimum

If you remember though, Jay Feaster specifically named John Weisbrod as the scout who liked Mark Jankowski. Last I checked, John Weisbrod worked for the Canucks.
