On another note if I'm Sony I leverage the hype (and gain some goodwill with the public) by tossing The Interview up on bit torrent for free. Even include a title slide about censorship and book burning just to drive the point home.

Sure it's a loss for them, but still get's the flick out there and make a bit of a statement.
could be a win win scenario for them, the hackers would then try to shutdown torrent sites and illegal file sharing of their movies and music would go down

I originally thought that this may have been a clever ruse from Sony to hype the movie and capitalize on it. But obviously they're not making money if they're delaying the release of it. Will be interesting to see how they deal with it moving forward.

Meh, there's a reason movies always have fictional European/Middle Eastern nations in them, it's to avoid this exact scenario.

I liked James and Seth in Freaks and Geeks. But this is just poor taste.

I was going to say Will Ferrell, and especially sequels to his movie, but Tyler Perry is ok as well.

Oh and downloads of Pooty Tang, that movie is still killing people.

I don't understand why cancelling the movie would make people want to see it more. It is rubber-necking? We sort of know the concepts of the movie anyways.

I guess I have vastly different movie tastes than most on this board but I loved Pineapple Express and this is the end and was looking forward to seeing this movie. in fact it was the centre piece of my Boxing Day plans. Pretty sad how some threat letter which can barely be described as being written in English can cause a movie to be pulled in our great land of free expression.

I'm with you. I was kind of surprised at all the Rogen/Franco hate in this thread.

Judd Apatow

This only guarantees that this movie will be seen by more people on Earth than it would have before. Legally or illegally all will see it.

Wait so they're never releasing it? Even for digital download?

The "hack" of Sony emails also revealed that some of the studio execs thought this movie was a total dud. Just not funny, and they were predicting a real bomb. I wonder if that has anything to do with it, and this is a convenient excuse? And, since they are sleazy Hollywood types, I wouldn't put it past them to play up the publicity, wait until the fuss dies down (I give it a week) and then they hope to get some $ back on their investment in this bad looking movie.

I think Seth Rogen is good (Franco not so much) but really, this looked like a plain-old bad movie. Usually, in the ads and trailers, they show the funniest parts. If those were the funniest parts, there is about 89 minutes of not funny.

Seth Rogen movies consistently have some of the highest profit margins in the industry, and this controversy gives the movie a level of buzz that you can't buy. I can't see the movie exec's leaving all that money on the table.

Sorry honey, we can't go to Annie tonight. There was a bomb threat. Tomorrow night too.

I didn't like Pineapple Express, but I had fun with This is the End.

And that is the extent of my contribution to this thread.

The release has been cancelled, yet previews are still happening multiple times during the Vancouver/Dallas telecast.

This is stupid but understandable when all the major theaters will not show it. Though the States should push Sony to release the movie so the hackers do not win.

If America, as a sovereign nation, starts to bow down to this then it sets a bad precedence and is a prelude to other situations that will follow. Allowing a few hackers to bully an entire nation will only invite more bullying further down the road as it legitimizes hacking and empty threats as a strategy to achieve political goals.

EDIT:
Leaving this here.
Spoiler!

Man, this sucks. I was totally looking forward to the movie too. Big fan of Randall Park, who plays Kim Jong Un. I was totally going to watch this on Boxing Day too. I hope it eventually gets released.

Apparently South Korean activists have gotten their hands on a copy of the movie and sending copies by balloon into North Korea.

So I'm not going to be able to watch the movie but the North Koreans are?
