Flames July 23 Practice notes

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Elias Lindholm is on the ice for practice at the Saddledome this afternoon.

He left Tuesday’s intra-squad game in the third period and didn’t return. #Flames

Ryan Pike @RyanNPike
#Flames rolling with 23 players in their main group today: 2 G, 8 D, 13 F.

Ryan Pike @RyanNPike
Sam Bennett with a red jersey (like the 4th line group) and Derek Ryan with a white jersey (like the 3rd line group).

Thank god about Lindholm. I wonder why he left?

Bummer about Bennett, but who knows how it will play out?

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
#Flames today at practice, which resembles a regular lineup:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Mangiapane
Lucic-Ryan-Dube
Bennett/Rinaldo-Jankowski-Rieder

Giordano-Brodie
Hanifin-Andersson
Forbort-Gustafsson
Kylington-Stone

Rittich

Bennett made a comment like that to the media.

“I seem to get more opportunities in the playoffs” when talking about why he is better in the postseason

Good stuff. Ryan deserves to be on the third line and deserves that spot instead of Bennett with a couple of nice showings during practice.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Fourth line has been a rotation. All four of Bennett, Rinaldo, Rieder, and Jankowski have rotated through.

Everything else static. #Flames

Ryan has established that he's the best option in that 3 spot compared to Bennett over a longer period of time, so I think this was an easy decision. Ryan makes whoever he plays with better, so I like this move and I'm not surprised.

I hope the 4th line is Bennett-Jankowski-Rieder/Rinaldo instead of Bennett/Rinaldo-Jankowski-Rieder

Haha I have been well on the other side of the Bennett-fair chance debate (I think it's all on him.)
But making him a potential sub for the 4th line seems like way too far. He was much better than Mark junk-owski all season.

Bottom line should be Rinaldo-Bennett-Czarnik if they're set on running the other three. Sub in Janko for Rinaldo if things aren't clicking, and keep reider as an injury fill in.

If this is what’s going to happen then bench Jankowski please.

Give Bennett a longer look at C.

To me the question shouldn't be about Ryan vs. Bennett at center. It's about where are Dube, Bennett, and Mangiapane best optimized.

Personally I prefer:

Tkachuk-Backlund-Bennett
Lucic-Ryan-Mangiapane
Dube-Janko- (Rinaldo/Czarnik/Reider/Gawdin)

Ryan and Mangiapane had their greatest success on the Flames by playing together, and they have been dominant as a line together and I think they should be kept together.

I personally think they should roll the top three lines heavily come playoffs with limited 4th line usage. Dube can swap in the top 9 for Lucic or Bennett if they are not as effective.

I don’t agree.

Mangipane was amazing when he was elevated to Tkachuk line be that with Lindholm or Backlund at center. Now if the playoff Sam Bennett shows up then it makes sense to have him in the top 6.

I don’t think pushing Dube or Mangipane down the lineup for Bennett makes any sense right now.

I would rather try the center experiment again before elevating Bennett on the wing. I have long been a Bennett fan and supporter as well

Mangiapane+Backlund+Tkachuk are great together, and are slightly better from an expected goals for perspective than with Bennett on that line but the real difference to me is just how good Mangiapane and Ryan are together.

They become an elite third line when paired together, and have undeniable chemistry. To me the benefit we get from having a third pair of forwards that are elite together (Gaudreau+Monahan, Tkachuk+Backlund, Ryan+Mangiapane), outweighs the benefit of Mangiapane on line two with Backlund & Tkachuk.

Look at how effective those three pairs of forwards are together, those three pairs should be the anchor of our forward lineup.

It's not a question of who has earned it or who is the better player.

It is a question (or should be) of which combination makes for the best lineup?

If Bennett is effective in that spot, between Lucic and Dube, and Ryan is effective anywhere, including the 4th line spot, then the lineup is deeper and stronger that way.

It isn't about either one of them, it's about winning playoff games.

It's not just about getting the combinations right, it's also about how to distribute ice-time. The coaches are probably going to want Ryan on the ice for 14/15 mins per game, whereas they definitely do not want Rinaldo, Jankowski or Reider logging more than 10-12 (especially not Rinaldo).

yes, but Ryan will get other shifts such as PK or defensive zone faceoffs
