Do you not consider seven years a long time?

Obviously didn't have that idea in mind...not a "good" memory per se, just one that sticks out as a significant thing from past Calgary history. Practically blocked out the sun for days.

There seem to be quite a few things posted in this thread that weren't necessarily "good" memories but significant ones nonetheless.

Wow, that jogged a few memories of having to cross that road. There was a Sam the Record Man at the top of the escalator when you went upstairs to go to the other side of the mall if I remember correctly.

Nope not him, but I did get a warning for a lowball offer the other day. Whoops.

Not really when other stuff in this thread is 20+ years. Still, you have a good point, it is a lot longer than I was thinking in my mind

There used to be a magazine that came in the Saturday or Sunday Herald. One of the issues had a "Top in Canada" article, with rankings for maybe 100 or so different categories. I remember going through, looking for where Calgary was mentioned, and one was Top Rollerskating Rinks. In fact, Calgary had the top 3 - Lloyds, Rollerland, and Hollywood Roller Gardens.

I did some more searching to try to remember the name of that magazine (was it "Saturday Night"?), and found this article in the Ottawa Citizen. It might be based on the same article, or maybe it is the same. The article says it is from "Today" magazine, but that doesn't ring any bells for me.

No, that's about right for the 60's, as I recall it. I lived in the western part of the city i.e. Westgate, Killarney, Rosscarock.

Other things that come to mind:

1. Being on a first name basis with the paperboy, mailman and milkman.

2. Larger lots and spaces between houses.

3. Small neighbourhood hardware stores e.g. Larry's Hardware at the corner of Old Banff Coach Rd. (Bow Trail) and 45th Street SW.

4. Letting the dog run loose (unleashed) to play with the kids.

12. Meeting US draft dodgers at parties.

These especially seem to have little to do with Calgary, specifically.

Taking the LRT downtown to play video games at one of the three arcades along 7th/8th ave. One of which had a massive pinball game that used a billiards ball as the pinball.

"Southern Fun"...that place was great if you didn't mind playing some pin around drug dealers.

That huge pinball machine was pretty terrible to play but was a neat novelty. I think it ended up over at Frank Sisson's for a time.

Lucky search. It's a good thing that Rollerland and Hollywood Roller Gardens are unique names. Here's a video that I found while searching as well:

I'm more and more convinced that the article from the Ottawa Citizen was the same one I remembered. The entry for Peter's Drive-In and MacKay's Ice Cream in the Best Hamburger/Best Ice Cream categories definitely triggered some synapses (I have a good memory when they are food-related. Something I'm still teased about today). Also, I recall Calgary winning best Airport.

The Google newspaper archive is incredible - lots of old Calgary Herald newspapers as well. Check out the selection of movies in June, 1981: The Great Muppet Caper, The Cannonball Run, Superman 2, Raiders of the Lost Ark, History of the World, For Your Eyes Only,
Stripes, Ordinary People... The past always seems like the golden age!
