How many stitches have you had?
My son had to get stitches last week and it got me thinking about my lifetime accumulation of stitches and I think I’m at about 12.
Figured this would make for an interesting conversation for a Friday.

Awesome topic.
My boy just got his first stiches a coupe of weeks ago, took a knee to the eyebrow, cut him open about an inch & a half. He took 12 stiches I think, a big big gash.
I think I am at 80ish in my life.

Were any of these combat related? I know you were in the Balkans while in the service but to be honest I’m pretty ignorant to the conflict. Did you see active combat? Am I allowed to ask that question? Please feel free to not answer.

Only 1 incident needing 12 in my chin. Stupid barrel riding. Cubs camp weekend lasted about 20 minutes.

Probably around 30-35, several different occasions. 3 separate incidents on top of my head alone...the worst one was from a trampoline growing up in the 90s. How most of us survived to adulthood playing on those early, death trap version of trampolines back then is beyond me.

8 total.
4 from a dog bite when I was a kid. 4 from falling out of a bouncy house when I was an adult.

C-sections absolutely count. I feel like the perception of c-sections are so wild in terms of it being some “easy” route when in reality women are just casually bringing a whole human life into the world WHILE undergoing an insane surgery where they get cut open hip to hip and have their guts moved around, and then are immediately expected to care for that human while they recover. Wild. Women who have c-sections whether by choice or not are ####ing badass.

Three in the centre of my tongue from when a guy booted me in the jaw after sucker punch KOing me. Getting them in was weird… but the broken jaw numbed the tongue pain. You can still feel where I bit through it, kinda interesting.

12 on my head.
6 on my chest when my sister accidentally stabbed me.
20 on my leg when I went to climb a barbed wire fence.
I think that's it.

I literally have no idea, didn't know this was a thing people counted.
I split my head open as a kid, so I got some then. Presumably had some when wisdom teeth were removed. And then I got some when I had a mole removed a couple years ago. My doctor fancies himself as an all rounder so he completed the excision but left an ugly scar on my back. Because it's on my back, I don't see it and don't care how ugly it is, but yeah it's kinda ugly.

13 on a finger from a Zamboni blade - we now wear cut proof gloves.
8 on my chin from a hockey crosscheck - cages were not around yet.
10 in my mouth and lip from a puck - no cage and under the visor.

So this is actually not that easy to remember… but if we don’t count surgeries, I had (numbers based on memory as these were years ago…) close to 45 stitches I think?
- I think 18 stitches (might have been a few more or less, I’m not sure—they were very close together) from an incident with a retractable dog leash that got stuck between my fingers while my dog was chasing a deer, and the rope cut an inch deep into the space between my index and middle finger. That one looked very gnarly but I’m told I was pretty lucky that it missed doing any nerve damage.
- 21 stitches from a gash in my arm from a very embarrassing home repair story that I only tell when I’ve been drinking. Let’s just say… I’m NOT the hero of that story.
- 2 stitches from a fishing incident where they had to open up the skin on my back to remove a treble hook that was sunk in past the barbs.
- 4 stitches in my arm from another (kind of embarrassing) injury where I smacked it against a screw that was sticking out of a wall…
I guess I’m learning from this that I’m a little on the accident-prone side. I feel like I may be forgetting one or two incidents here.
If we count surgeries it’s way more. I’ve had an appendectomy and hernia repair, the latter of which went a bit awry and resulted in a pretty sizeable incision. I have no idea how many stitches were in it, but it was a bunch.
And then I had a mole removed one time, and believe it or not they put ONE stitch into that to help it heal.

Got jumped at Flames Central about 10 years ago and one of the guys had a massive green ring on his finger that gave me a nice Harry Potter-like scar that took about 12 to close up.

About thirty-five, I think.
10 across my forehead after running headfirst into the underside of some pull-out bleachers.
5 in my lip after going face-first down some stairs into a metal handrail.
20 in my back to close up a surgical site.
