I think Mccrum's is a big name in office furniture. If I'm not mistaken they have a warehouse just off Mcleod, north of Chinook.

if you're willing to spend, try RGO office furniture. They have a tonne of selection and high quality stuff. Sometimes they have some "as is" items in the warehouse as well.
I also picked some good stuff up at the the Govt of AB surplus auctions. They auctioned off a bunch of ATB furniture that worked out well for me. This was a special auction. The monthly stuff can be more miss than hit. occasionally some good deals on older tech stuff like printers, switches, modems, etc

PM rotten42, he's in the office furniture industry and helped me out with some great insight a little while back when I was looking.
RGO and COI are probably the places to go to if you want nice furniture (Herman Miller, Steelcase etc). One cheaper manufacturer you might also want to check out is Artopex. A step below the higer end manufacturers, but ive heard they make nice stuff for the money.
Oh and I know you said no Ikea, but they did just come out with a new line of tables called Bekant to replace the Gallant series. I haven't seen it in person myself though, but visually it doesn't look terrible. Im curious to see what the build quality is like.

I'm not 100% sure if it's in stock at the stores yet btw, so don't go down there on my account! The last time I checked the site it said they were coming in September, but nothing more specific.

In that case, let us know if it's in stock.

$600 won't buy you much at RGO or McCrums. Source has pretty decent stuff for budget furniture, I'd go there.

I know it's not everybody's cup of tea, but have you considered antiques?
Much of furniture is vintage stuff I've acquired over the last ~15 years. Solid, real wood (which you'd pay a premium for new), durable, often built really well.
I've fixed up/re-finished a few pieces that were in pretty bad shape on the surface, and I don't really have a clue what I'm doing, so I'd say anybody can do it.
Calgary (and much of S. Alberta, actually) can be really expensive when it comes to antiques, but there are deals to be had if you're on the lookout.

$600 won't get you much. For that price range you already went to where I would suggest. (Source) The stuff is marginable better than Ikea.
The next level would be from manufacturers like Artopex, 3H and possibly Global. You can get some decent stuff from these manufacturers. 3H manufactures to the inch....meaning if you need a 63" return, they make it. The others manufacture to 6" increments.
As stated most of the major contract office furniture dealers have a used section. There can sometimes be very good deals here but it is hit and miss.
If you want to look at the majors, here is the list:
RGO - Steelcase
COI - Herman Miller
HBI - Haworth
McCrums - Teknion
Element - Knoll
I've worked for 3 of them on that list so depending on what you are looking at I can give you some more direction.

We have Gallant's in our office and I went to buy a new one a couple weeks ago and they're almost completely sold out.
They did not have the new series in stock yet and the worker said they wouldn't till mid-October.
We ended up going on Kijiji to find someone selling a Gallant so it would match the rest of the desks.
Used might be a good option for you. People are always unloading quality desks on Kijiji from failed businesses or businesses that are moving. It would take a bit more legwork but you could get something great for cheap.

I bought a quality set from Kijiji. I am not bad with assembling stuff but the big advantage of buying from Kijiji is it is already put together. Saved you tons of time.

See I don't buy the Kijiji thing. I think all people are looking for on Kijiji is price point. A couple years ago I went to see off a home office suite after we closed out showroom. The thing was beautiful. It would normally sell for $8500. I put it up for $1500 because I didn't have room for it. I( couldn't sell it. Yup....got lots of calls from low-ballers offering $300.
There really is two issues for office furniture:
crap but low price
quality but open your wallet.
