What's with the "learn to run" programs? Is it instruction, motivation, or something else?

Instruction, motivation, some accountability. Some people do better with instructions. These programs are also typically designed so that you ease into things and don’t hurt yourself as much.

Many people who start running run too fast and too much. So the programs focus on run walking and limiting distance and intensity to get you past the worst part of running. Starting to do it again.

A little from column A, a little from column B

Usually it's a group that motivates each other, while following a set plan. That way you don't over do it, while properly pushing yourself.

A set plan similar to but totally isn't behind the spoiler tag

Spoiler!

My problem in the past was doing too much too soon, and not taking enough rest days.

Following the pre-set plans I see improvement while not killing myself.

Currnetly the 10K program is just 3.2K on Mondays, but with hills. I varied it slightly to just do the streets around my house, but those has a 23m elevation, and I push myself hard on those days as I'm never far from home and it's a short run. Then my long run I take it easier as I'm going for distance and not worrying about time.

Just wanted to say that tonight was the first time I ran 10K in over six years.

Followed the running program, didn't sway from the plan. Probably could have done it a few weeks ago, but that wasn't the plan and may have overexerted myself.

Legs are sore at the moment, but three months ago I wasn't in shape enough to run 5 minutes in a row. Tonight, 10K.

I need some help in eliminating muscle cramping/spasms. The past couple of longer runs it's been a problem for me. I wanted to do ~30k today but had to bail at 18k because my quads were just spasming and cramping. What can I do to get rid of this?!

Are you taking in enough salts during your runs?

What is your longest previous run before dining the 30?

I think that's a piece of the issue; maybe I need some salt pills.

~20km or so. I feel strong at that stage and it's just the quads that were an issue. I actually walked off most of the problem and ran the final few kms yesterday, but I didn't want to get hurt and push for 30 at that point, because that would do more harm than good.

Vic, do you drink too MUCH water? I’ve run dozens of races but those days are over. If you drink too much water it can dilute your sodium and electrolytes.

Well, tough to say. I picked up some salt sticks and people rave about these online to deal with muscle spasms and cramps, so I'll see how that goes. I've got a long race in a month, so needless to say, I really hope that I've found a solution!

To continue on the health, getting in shape journey I purchased a gym membership today. First time in 41 years.

My son's going to be taking swimming lessons at the Y and I figure this is the kick in the pants I need to join myself.

Probably should start a thread, but I have no idea what I should be doing, any advice is helpful.

Not to derail ... 5K today in under 25 minutes. Cardo is doing well.

Running a 5km in Banff tomorrow (I know, pretty bad ass). Been carbo-loading the past couple days...anything else I should do to prepare for game day?

Dress appropriately. Weather looks kind of chilly.

Hire someone to chase you in a bear costume?

Yeah, I have been thinking about the bear situation. I'm going to bring my dog pepper spray since it's pretty concealable. If I see a bear I'm going to spray the people around me so I can make a clean getaway.

I can only conclude the lack of updates here means Sliver was a delicious snack.
