Only in hockey does a players injury effect the actual suspension. So dumb

After Krushelnyski's goal gave Los Angeles a 4-3 victory and this first-round playoff series in six games, the Flames dressed without any visible emotion. They had been angry over a disallowed goal by Doug Gilmour that would have won the game for them late in the first overtime, but now they were quiet. They did not curse their luck, which, considering the bloop game-winner, their territorial dominance in overtime and referee Denis Morel's quick whistle on the Gilmour shot, was abysmal. Still, after having fallen behind 3-1 in a series they had figured to win decisively, they knew the perils of playing on the edge. "We didn't lose the series tonight," said defenseman Jamie Macoun. "We lost it by playing badly earlier in the series."
Nevertheless, Calgary could have prevailed had Gilmour's goal-that-wasn't been allowed to stand. Gilmour chipped the puck from behind the L.A. net. The puck ricocheted off the back of goalie Kelly Hrudey's right leg and slithered toward the goal line. Goal judge Ted Metcalfe illuminated the goal light, and the entire Flame team rushed onto the ice in celebration. But Morel talked to Metcalfe on a phone and ruled no goal. Morel had lost sight of the puck and apparently assumed that Hrudey had covered it, so he whistled the play dead. "The goal judge saw it [the puck] in after it [the play] was killed [whistled dead]," Morel said later. "I had killed play." If that's the case, why did Morel need to consult with Metcalfe before making his ruling?
"Some things are to be," said Calgary defenseman Ric Nattress, "and some things are not to be." That is an observation that can be made whenever Wayne Gretzky appears in a postseason series.

The disallowed goal is a convenient excuse. As mentioned, it was going down 3-1 in a series they should have swept, like the year previous. And then the aftermath. Firing Terry Crisp. Who fires their Stanley Cup winning coach after the following season? And then the Gilmour Trade.

It started with Steve Smith's own goal, effectively ruining the Oiler love-in (for one season at least).
The Flames have never been forgiven.

yeah I was partly joking and there was tonnes of blame to go around. they over-reacted to this loss, in a way similar to what happened after the Anaheim loss in 06
still the call was horrible

Expect Mark Giordano to be suspended for hit against Mikko Koivu. Extending a knee to an opponents knee and causing an injury has always been a suspension.

Absolute joke. Backlund is out two games.... time for Dumba to have a hearing because he certainly could have avoided a hit. If Giordano gets suspended for a trip the league officiating is a joke

Does anyone know what his injury is? Looked to me that he fell awkwardly, upper or lower body injury?

Man talk about a costly win. Both Gio and Backlund likely out of the lineup this weekend just when the team was on a big roll.

Frustrating because he doesn't extend his knee, he kicks his skate out and trips Koivu.

What. A. Joke.
Bet it would have only been 1 game if we weren't playing the Oil Sunday.

Just remember that Gio's being suspended because there was an injury on the play. Always a suspension when a dirty play leads to injury...
Except for the Backlund hit. That head hit that resulted in an injury was clean for...reasons.

Two guys suspended, and one guy injured, for one of the biggest weekends of the year so far.
And most of it is avoided if they call the blatant trip on Backlund.

Exactly - it's a trip, a classic football trip when the guy is going by you. He doesn't lead with the knee or target the opponent's knee. It's a shin on shin trip. 2 minutes certainly. That's it.
