Would you pay to access online news?
I was just reading an article about Rupert Murdoch. The article is primarily discussing how Murdoch is upset that his companies doesn't get the names of the people who purchase Kindle subscriptions for his newspapers (the Wall Street Journal is mentioned). http://www.dailyfinance.com/2009/08/...names-or-else/
But then he said something else:
Quote:
Murdoch revealed that the company plans to introduce pay models for all its news websites by the end of the next fiscal year. Moreover, he said that it won't be only the newspaper sites that adopt this change; foxnews.com, he said, will also start charging for content. "It has a huge and loyal and profitable [web] audience already," he said.
|
Is he shooting himself in the foot? I understand mass media are hurting big time, but early on many tried to charge for news and they lost all their readers to places with the same news for free.
Would you pay for access to online news?

There's news sites outside of CP?

I read most of my morning news through the New York Times iPhone app. It's a great resource, and I'd consider maybe paying for it if it was very reasonable....but I doubt I would pay for any website on the web, there are just so many other free options. I'm sure even if something as addictive as CP started charging money, you'd soon see a very large exodus and the creation of a free alternative.

When I was in school with no TV I paid for an online CNN subscription for video.
The rumors are these are just going to be the channel streaming online. Which for some channels I would pay for.

Nope. I see Rupert Murdoch as the Al Davis of the multinantional news companies. I know that is a way to simplistic view point, but in some ways it could be apt.

Is Al Davis worth 7Bil? Not do defend ole Rupert who reminds me of the media mogul from James Bond X with Pierce Brosnan and the Brunette jugs chick - but that is taking it a smidge far.
Eventually they will need premium service to cover the costs of the website or they will end up like local news and newspapers who are hurting alot right now. Currently the websites of all news companies are loss leaders which are supported by the TV.

I wouldn't pay. There used to be a really good sports website I would go to for all my NFL and Chiefs news around 10 years ago. They started to charge for the service and I haven't visited since. Same with the ESPN Insider. They tease you with some big headline. You click on the link and they try to get you to sign up for the Insider. No thanks.

If everybody colluded, they might get people to pay for the news. But why would you when there are so many good free alternatives to everything?

I would pay for news if they would actually have all of the news setup in a way that I could easily peruse what is happening all over in the world. If I was in the mood for local I could just do a couple clicks and there are the stories for the day.
I hate the news sites that just show the same 5 or 10 stories in a different format in each section. Go look at the Calgary Herald. What a waste of time that is. I just look at the couple headlines and then I am done for the day.
How much would I pay? $10 a month maximum.

Who wouldn't pay for such fair and balanced news coverage from Rupert? He's really doing a thankless public service by keeping people informed. We should have been paying him years ago for such dedicated service.

I would pay cnn.com not to yammer about twitter, something on twitter, or how its hip to have twitter, every 10 minutes. Actually I would pay big bucks to never hear the word twitter ever again.

Not to argue semantics but technically Fox isn't news, it is entertainment.

Not likely! A quick google of the story and you'll have many different sources to view that are probably not a subscription site. Even better someone who has a subscription is bound to post the news on some message board like this one.

The newspaper business has already proven that forcing users to pay simply won't work. Frankly, if news site X begins to charge, everyone will just go to news site Y that is free.
Though I did pay $2.99 for the Canadian Press app on my blackberry.

It's actually brilliant.
Where else are these people going to get similar news for free?
They offer a unique product to a certain market and they dominate it. If they charge, they'll make a killing.
