Default Backlund Update.. round 3 Game 1 against Giants

Here is the game story on Kelowna's 4-2 first game win over the Giants in Vancouver. I saw the Backlund goal and assist in the 2nd period on a highlight package and they both were exceptional plays.

another report on the game:

http://www.kelownarockets.com/Story.aspx?ID=579

Quote:
Mikael Backlund was the game’s first star, scoring a beautiful goal and setting up both of Ian Duval’s markers on the night. Unless you saw Backlund’s second period goal that opened the scoring, you really missed something.

With a full head of steam taking him through the neutral zone, the dynamic Swede crossed the Vancouver line before cutting outside, then quickly back in and launching a searing wrist shot that beat Tyson Sexsmith cleanly, low on the glove side.

Then, after Mitch Callahan had made it 2-0, Backlund turned ‘Super Hero’ again. As Craig Schira was edging the puck out of the Vancouver zone, Backlund chased him down from behind, lifted his stick and stole the puck.

Before Schira knew what had happened, Backlund had reached Duval with a tape to tape pass. From beneath the right wing circle, Duval drilled one off the post to make it 3-0 after 40 minutes.

Yeah his first goal froze Sexsmith and his pass was a beauty.

Backlund has 2 more assists tonight but took a penalty at the end of regulation. Going to OT tied 3-3.

Giants won 4-3 on OT. Lance Bouma assisted on the game winner by Casey Piero-Zabotel. Backlund was 2nd star in the game.

It's nice to see Bouma making as much of an impact when a lot of people think he's hurt.

Backlund is the WHL player of the Week.

That would be a great series to watch. Nice to see him playing well in the playoffs and against a pretty dominate team this year.

To me, it's starting to look like Backlund will play in Calgary next year. The only problem I see, is him getting up for regular season games as he sure seems to produce in the money games.

after all the issues we've had with players who are the other way around in Calgary, i wouldn't mind that one bit

I watched part of the third period on shaw and Backlund was generating tons of offense, I'm surprised he is no where close to the team lead in points, he was putting on a show.

No points for Backlund tonight, but Kelowna wins 3-0 over Vancouver.

funny how he can be this much of a money player but unable to crack the lineup in sweden.

Is he a men amongst boys out there? Will there be an issue with him adjusting to physically larger opponents?

Yeah it'll be interesting to see how he fares against men in the pros but I don't see any obvious problems.

It's not like he's a small physical player like Brule who had a great junior career, but can't seem to transfer his game to the bigger pro game. Backlund may need to just gain some confidence while he plays in the right situations.

Part if it might be a man among boys comparision. But it does sound like their was was politicking with Backlund with his old club.

From what I've seen I have no worries about whether he can handle the physical game, I would almost say that he is well suited to it. He is good in the corners and has a good defensive side as well. So far, he is not the problematic no-effort floater that he was portrayed to be in Sweeden. I love the fact that he's playing for the Rockets because it will only further add to the flames fan base in the interior of BC.
I'd say it's a strong bet that he will crack Calgary's lineup next year.
BTW series tied at 2 apiece.
