Default Nextdoor Launches In Canada

So apparently Nextdoor, the American neighborhood spy network social media group for boomers to complain about teenagers and tall grass, has launched in Canada.

Calgary's groups are sparse and still spinning up, but it will be interesting to see if the impact on Canadians is similar to what has gone down in the US.

I got a addressed envelope in the mail, letting me know about this:

To: 123 1st street

Nextdoor has launched in your neighborhood, bla bla bla.

Join with this link.

Pretty targeted push to get this going here. As Iggy mentions above, why bother, just join a FB neighborhood group.

I'm on there. Rarely is there anything useful. Mostly just lost pets.

I haven't seen anything too terrible on there in my area. There was one nimby lady who was super upset about a gas station being approved to be built at a major intersection.

But have you spent considerable time seeking out posts on there, just so that you can get upset about them? No? Have you even really used the platform then?

Of course, there is a major downside to the intersection of nosy neighbours, Nextdoor, and Ring/Nest video doorbells.

I guess I'm not old enough to get it and not young enough to be annoyed by this.

I received a similar letter in McKenzie Towne.

I've joined the Facebook groups for my neighbour (Neighbourhood Watch, News and a Rants one). It has occasional value but 90% of the time it just makes me hate my neighbours. Specifically the Facebook moms.

As I recall the Soviets tried this for a time after the Nazis test-drove the original concept rather successfully.

At least according to the State-Issued reports it was received to rave reviews from the people!

Yes, I basically can't stand middle-aged women anymore now that I've seen the dumb crap they think and post about. I had to quit Facebook largely because of them. So thankful my wife isn't like that.

Pointless busy time for housewives and retirees. The advantage of this and other FB neighbourhood pages is at least it teases some of the crazy out of people that would otherwise go unnoticed with your 5 minute exchange at the post office box. I certainly know better who to stay away from in my hood.

I should say that some of the men on these groups are just as bad. Ranting, busy-bodies who are intolerant of others or don't remember what it was like to be a kid are the worst. Those people come in all shapes and sizes.

I joined up on a few neighborhood ones on Fb fairly recently and I really like the entertainment value actually. Call me easily entertained.

I cant believe the level of paranoia for some people. Not everyone who rings your doorbell or walks by your house in a hoody is trying to rob or kill you.

I've also quickly learned that pretty much everyone except me has a doorbell camera or security camera.

Helen was aghast when I reached out to the community for bidet recommendations.

Oh f--k, tell me about it. Our Facebook group is bad enough sometimes for that crap, random emotional panics about problems that don't and never have existed that must be fixed by any ridiculous means necessary "because reasons". Then they get the 'fix' they want, it doesn't work and actually makes things worse for everyone, and they double-down on it.

Our neighbourhood just got a NextDoor group and it has been pretty quiet so far.

My favourite moment on our neighbourhood Facebook group was when someone warned of someone who said they were washing windows but had no vehicle and looked "shady" (i.e. he was black).

The person in question was assuring people that there was no way this guy was an actual window watcher, and looked inside her house when she answered the door and surely was coming back to rob it, so she'd called the police.

The guy had just finished washing my windows, he was with a fairly well known company (Property Stars) and was walking down the block with his machine doing the typical "I washed your neighbours windows, so I can do yours for a discount while I'm here."

Letting everyone know she was racist and he did a great job was satisfying.
