Twitter to Ban all Political Advertising
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50243306
Apologies for the new thread but better to make one new instead of stuffing it into one of the plethora of mega political threads.
Quote:
Twitter is to ban all political advertising worldwide, saying that the reach of such messages "should be earned, not bought".
"While internet advertising is incredibly powerful and very effective for commercial advertisers, that power brings significant risks to politics," company CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted.
Social media rival Facebook recently ruled out a ban on political ads.
News of the ban divided America's political camps for the 2020 election.

They are a fascist-wannabe President too late, but it's a step in the right direction.

What happened to the real Jack Dorsey? Gotta be a body snatchers kind of situation.

It will be interesting if this helps to prevent bot amplification of false messages.
The freely shared non-factual information in my opinion was a worse problem then paid adds.
This is also small potatoes relative to Facebook with 10 times the install base.

Twitter is awful. I hate myself when I am reading it.
It has made society worse than before it existed. Significantly worse. Same with Facebook. Meaningful connections are down, misinformation is up, dumbing down of society is accelerating and critical thought evaporating. Twitter is a cesspool of societies worst opinions put on a pedestal and given gasoline while holding a match.

Twitter should be banned just because of the lag it causes to CP when loading threads.

No thanks. It’s great for sports. And easy to unfollow any sports people who wade into politics.

To be fair, it is good for sports.
It has no use beyond that though.

I love Twitter and it's quite useful to me. If you follow good people, you can get an incredible amount of exposure to ideas and topics you otherwise would miss (or at least I would). What I can't really understand, is that the stock valuation is so terrible and it's poor as a business, but has such an impact at the same time.
And for current events, sports, and basically anything live it's just a fantastic resource. Yeah, you have to do some filtering through the cesspool that is social media in general, and try to avoid politics because it's a ring below cesspool on there, but I really like it.

You're following the wrong people then. Twitter is incredible as it let's you get access to interesting people sharing interesting ideas.
Even in politics I note most of the stuff i see on twitter is fairly reasonably presented, and I follow UK and US politics quite closely. I think one thing that works well is to not follow people who post in bad faith, are hysterical or repeatedly lie/misrepresent facts.
it's like the real world, tune out the idiots and it's pretty good.

People who think Twitter is the worst should probably call up Thor and connect to some masochistic kink community. You're doing it to yourself.

Their refusal to police bots is 100X more damaging to democracy than any clear political ads they run. Twitter really has had a negative impact on the health of western democracies imo which is such a shame because it's a great tool if the owners would show some ethical leadership.

Except for the "promoted" tweets that Twitter puts into your feed - basically targeted ads. This new rule makes it so that these promoted tweets can't be political.

It's incredibly helpful for me in my industry because other specialists and professionals post their blog content and technical manuals regularly, which has helped my passive training and knowledge base significantly. Twitter can be a really effective tool as long as you are able to filter out the noise both using the tool and just using your mental filter.
