I was actually watching a photography video the other day but it was on a different device and I can't find it. They were responding to questions and someone wanted to know when they got interested in it as a serious hobby. It was during COVID when everyone had to find something else to do, but they couldn't (or didn't) explicitly say that even though the intent was clear.
I don't think Google will ever publish a list of bad words.
An example of a video? Here's a hockey video talking about the 2019-2020 season without mentioning what happened by name.
That video has not been demonetized. Do you have an example of any that are? I will say, just because a bunch of Youtubers are doing a certain thing, doesn't mean it's based in fact. They may have heard rumours and are doing this "one neat trick to avoid being demonized" but it probably isn't necessary at all, unless you are breaking the rules I just posted.

It hasn't been demonetized because he refrained from using the word! Hah. All these crazy things happened in the NHL that year. Why?
From the Quora thread I posted:

This is just due to money — as many problems in life are caused by.
Basically, saying the “C word” (not the Australian one) will get your video “demonetized”, and you’ll get zero or minimal ad revenue from it.
Referring to something as “the really bad cold” in a video as Kim Iverson does is just silly. Funny…but silly.
It sounds stupid, and everyone knows what you are talking about anyway. So I’m not sure what the advertisers care about.
I blame YouTube. They shouldn’t set up a system that essentially demands people to self-censor in this way just to support themselves on the platform.
According to your claim, a video like this should be demonetized, but it isn't.
To find out, right click on the page(on youtube) and select "inspect" or press F12. In the "search html" box, enter "yt_ad": '1' if you find that, it means it's monetized.

They will let media and scientists (this individual is a doctor) make videos like that.

I'm talking about simply referring to the word as a proxy for a certain recent era of time.

Certainly don't disagree, but I have no experience trying to monetize YouTube videos so I lowered the bar to try and seek some anecdotal input.

OK, so I've given you the tools to see if their is truth to that. Let us know what you find.
OK, so Joe Rogan talking covid and ivermectin...still monetized.
Yes, you'll have to put some manual effort into it, I think. Like I said, people doing things isn't evidence of anything. People took ivermectin to prevent covid, that doesn't mean it works, it just means people are followers and not sharp enough to look for themselves.
I’ve seen channels that self-censor “COVID” like they do for “suicide”. Maybe they’re being overly cautious but YouTube is not transparent at all about how these things work.
A big channel can say stuff that little ones can’t. Mr. Beast would get yanked if he wasn’t so huge of a money maker for them.

FYI I think you need to view page source, not inspect.
But yeah, from SNL skits to anti-vaxx content to just regular people talking about COVID (I even searched some photography videos mentioning it and confirmed they were monetized), it’s pretty obviously not a thing.

Weird made up gripe.
The argument isn't whether or not they avoid the word in some videos. That's a fact. Did you watch the first few minutes of the hockey video?
My hypothesis is that they were being demonetized, and Fuzz pointed out some counterexamples and quoted the policy. Now I think they may have some fear of being demonetized despite the policy since they're clearly avoiding it.
Weird how almost everyone here can discuss and you can't or won't.

Sure, but people also think if they don't post "I do not give Facebook permission to use my pictures, blah, blah, blah" that Facebook will copyright their personal photos and gain control of everything they've ever posted. That doesn't mean they're correct. Content creators having a misunderstanding of a policy and self-censoring themselves isn't the platform's fault.
I mean, simple logic would suggest saying COVID doesn't lead to demonetization. There are tons of grifters who still go on and on about COVID, and their entire business model relies on riling up viewers to generate ad revenue. If the mere mention of COVID meant they couldn't generate that revenue, then 1) They basically wouldn't exist anymore; and 2) They would be howling from the rooftops about it and there would be more concrete evidence of this happening than Quora comments from 4 years ago (which is when YouTube did temporarily demonetize COVID content right at the beginning of the pandemic).

And your hypothesis, originally stated as fact, was wrong, as pointed out and discussed repeatedly (even as you claim people can’t or won’t discuss it).

Not sure why you’re struggling this much.
Well the gear grinder is still valid even if the underlying reason was wrong.
It still grinds her gears that people avoid saying Covid.
The reason they avoid saying Covid doesn’t really change the validity of the gear grinder at all.
