One day, years from now, the world will laugh and laugh at how we had this infinite energy source and we couldn't figure out how to make it work.

Solar isn't a matter of if, but when. This is all necessary for that inevitability.

In my lifetime, it is unlikely we wean completely off of fossil fuels but the solution is going to be a number of different inputs. Also, as the population grows, if we can at least replace that additional demand with renewables, we will be better off as a planet.

That's cool. That doesn't mean those types of energy companies can't have offices here. Regardless of where they build and test their infrastructure, we should be attracting energy innovation companies like that, regardless.

Also, does that information you linked to have anything to do with Heliogen and their product? Is that their infrastructure?

We do, for areas that are relevant to Alberta's resources or expertise. Such as hydrogen from the oil sands:

They're based on the same principles, except less challenging due to lower temperatures. And Heliogen provides few details beyond temperature, such as the amount of actual available energy. 1000+C temperatures can be useful, but there's be demonstrations of even higher temperatures from 50 years ago:

The question is whether it can scale up to be actual useful. Another issue is that the potential big industrial users like steel mills, aren't located in the desert.

Seems to me the company that Gates is funding is trying to use their process to fix the issue with industrial processes like cement production having high carbon emissions.

I bet you Greta never talked about that.

That’s completely ass-backwards. Solar panels function better at cooler temperatures and less efficiently at high temperatures.

Not to mention southern Alberta has more full sun hours than most places in North America.

I've read this too - I'm curious is there is a limit to this though? 5C = great. -5C = okay. -15C = ????

Concentrated solar is mirror arrays pointed at a central boiler tower to generate steam. It's different than photovoltiac panels.

The scientists make specific calls for policymakers to quickly implement systemic change to energy, food, and economic policies. But they go one step further, into the politically fraught territory of population control. It “must be stabilized—and, ideally, gradually reduced—within a framework that ensures social integrity,” they write.

Time to form the compassionate death squads.

We can make it work easily. It’s batteries where we have the problem.

Climate aside, I'm not sure our current end-of-life process is exactly a homerun (in the vast majority of cases).

Hitler, Stalin, Kissinger, if you're one of histories greatest monsters then you're basically a shoe in for Time's Person of the year. All she needs now is a Nobel peace prize.

Is this not just an award for most news generated? The amount of people who have to go out of their way to slight her is disturbing.

Ya, they should really call it "news maker of the year" so we don't have to have this discussion every year.
