Default Where do you get your news (and do you pay for it)?

I never watch the news on tv and use internet sites for almost all of my news information. I usually poke around a few sites with my morning coffee.

I am finding it increasingly hard to get good, free news information in one place, particularly with good Canadian content.

I was thinking about subscribing to the National Post online service as I don't mind their format and it's about ten bucks a month. I'm fine with paying for a good news service site.

Does anyone else have a site that they use and recommend, free or not?

Thanks.

Google News - news aggregators are the best.

Also, Reddit is pretty awesome.

Find the right people to follow on twitter and most of the time the story is up and read before the news services get it out.

Anywhere but the Calgary Sun. I don't know if it is just a new thing but I don't remember them being such a biased garbage newspaper. They never check facts and post lie after lie and seem like they have an agenda with every story.

It also doesn't help that it seems like the people who comment on stories are the dumbest people on the planet.

I like the Herald most of the time and Reddit.

Why does everyone always say this whenever this is brought up? Calgarypuck is amazing, don't get me wrong. But more so for discussion on a variety of topics.

How many news items do you get from calgaypuck, if this is where you get your news? Like a couple major international stories per week, plus maybe a couple local ones?

I have an old fashioned Economist subscription. It also gives me access to their website and iOS app which is nice. Works out to around $13/month and their content (both print and online) is fantastic.

A Twitter list which is about half local sources (CBC/Global Calgary, etc.) and half general sources, and then r/worldnews or CNN for everything else.

Here. And if pay for it, just don't tell anyone.

In addition to here Google News, and I check the local paper online. I don't pay for any of it. Probably would pay for access to the local paper if the price was reasonable but I leech access off of the family.

CTV & Global newscasts for local news
CBC.ca for some local and national news
The Irish Times for Irish news
The Guardian for football and world news

I very occasionally buy a newspaper or magazine if I want some in depth coverage (don't like reading long articles on a computer screen). Depending on my mood, that has included Calgary Herald, National Post, Globe & Mail, Macleans, The Economist, The New Yorker & The Atlantic. None of this is particularly often. Handful of times a year, maybe.

I also use CP a lot. If I see a new topic pop up in off-topic I know it's a big story.

I'm turning into my dad. I watch the news in the morning before work and I love to listen to 660 and 770 when I'm driving.

Yep, don't really need to sit around hearing about the guy who saved that cat from the tree, or that people are really worried about housing prices, or which actor got a DUI. I already know or don't care.

On my Bell receiver I'll put a news channel on pause on one tuner, watch something else on the other tuner and come back to watch the news later. This way I can skip the ads and the cat in the tree vids.
