Default CTV News Lisa LaFlamme has been let go

I thought I would post this as I think it is an interesting event in Canadian Media. CTV National News, the most watched newscast in Canada is letting it's chief anchor go after all these years.

Lisa took over from Lloyd Robertson who was in the chair for many many years. Although fewer people get their nightly news from TV still, this is still a very highly sought after position within the Canadian media landscape.

Perhaps it was a financial decision as I can see Lisa getting $1 million a year or something in salary but perhaps there is something else that has also happened as well.

Regardless, someone will pick her up.

It was “breaking news” on Facebook that she was using her influence to peddle cannabis….but who would care about that?

Radio could be a bellwether for TV in some regards here. I could see newscasts being scaled down in cost structure with so much switching to streaming platforms. Still, I would be kinda surprised if she is making a million/year, that seems high but I have no idea what salaries are like for network TV news.

All I can find is that she makes between $300k and $350k.

But yeah, mainstream media has to roll with the punches.

Can't imagine there is a huge overlap between pot lovers and those who watch 24/7 news channels.

I think this was considered fake news and was a result of some bad click bait. This has been going on with her name and other well known people for years. I found this article from earlier this year.

i don't remember the last time i actually regularly "tuned into news"... it's just so depressing

I really enjoyed watching Lisa LaFlamme. After 35 years they wouldn't even let her do her final sign off from the news desk and instead she had to say farewell from her house?? That's a hell of a bad look for Bell Media. I also love her subtle shade directed at them, seems like it's well deserved.

With the state of media in this country they know they can get away with it.

You never know what's going on behind the scenes in TV studios. Personality clashes, tightening of the purse strings, or maybe they truly believe they need to change direction.

Would anyone be shocked if it came down to money? It seems Rogers and Bell are on a quest to chip away at media salaries and won't be happy until they are paying everyone minimum wage.

I've liked Lisa, I thought she was professional, asked good questions, reported well on the big events. Whether this is about salary or something else, its a bad look. The fact that she had to do her own farewell on Twitter, seems to feel completely bush league.

There's no doubt that she'll be picked up "This is Lisa Laflamme for Rebel news, good night and burn it all down"

I kid, I kid.

Just don't fire Marcia.

She was one of the increasingly rare truly professional journalists. Denying a proper send off is major whack.

She's a woman in her 50's, working in television. There's no mystery here.

My parents watched CTV news with Lloyd Robertson every single night when I was growing up. I have never consciously turned over to CTV news since I moved out. I remember CTV giving Lloyd a gracious send-off.

I doubt anybody under the age of 40 actually watches evening news anymore. This is a dying segment even though it's still the #1 rated news program in Canada. Bell knows the writing is on the wall and the accountants have no mercy.

What's more interesting to me is that they didn't just let her contract play out and then force her into retirement with a send-off but they just decided to axe her right away like they do with with sports broadcasters, etc.

News shows like newsprint needs to evolve or it will become extinct.

Man CTV is taking a bath on their handling of this online.

I do feel sorry for Omar though, what a way to get a spot.
