Cool. Now we've given Gaudreau away for free as part of that strategy.
Great strategy

Why even bother feeding this booger eater at this point? He's so deep in the nsr river valley that sturgeon are flopping around in his tent. He'd lick the sweat off of evanders taint if Connor would just give Him a wink.
Not worth anyone's energy at all

With the exception of one or two teams that go deep in the playoffs, the trade deadline benefits selling teams only. How many fans criticizing this trade wanted the Flames to make deadline additions? If you did then you got what you asked for and shouldn't be criticizing the GM. At least in this case the Flames have two more years of the player. He's not a great player but he's a good player and will probably net the Flames a decent return at the trade deadline in two seasons.

I wouldn't call it a setback, but a wrong direction. The asset cost wasn't huge, but it was a strike for the past and present chipping away at the future. At least the team received a league average player. Since they appear to have no intention of moving in a direction that is less focused on next season, Toffoli is a better option cost wise then what they would likely acquire via FA, and keeps management from spending potentially more in assets to fill the hole his presence fills.

With JG's money well spent the Flames are still a play off team.

Perhaps, but the team just lost a player who is truly gifted at zone entry. They won't replace that on an individual level, so the team is going to have to make significant adaptations. We'll see how they manage, but unless someone like Dube or Ruzicka shows some unreal development the team will need to be extraordinarily cohesive. If anyone could lead that type of team it wouldbe Sutter, but time will tell.

Shaping up to be a top 10 pick at this point.
Cool.
So, anyone know if it's lottery exempt? Super curious about that now with Bedard.

If things go south next season (doubtful but if they do) they can always flip him at the deadline. His salary is affordable and if he continues to score at a 20 goal pace he should fetch a 2nd round pick which mitigates some of the losses. Also the Flames will be a 100 point season in 2023 (this is simply how the team rolls ever 2nd year) so if the pick ends up top 10 this season it's the Flames and the Habs would get the 2023 pick which will be in the 20's.

Lol. They already picked Filip Mesar with the Calgary pick.
The Toffoli trade was fantastic.

Damn, we traded two firsts for Toffoli? And didn't lottery protect the 2023 pick either?!?
Fire Brad, this is simply too much.
