You don't get "steals" at trade deadline, it was the cost at the time the Flames made to get more depth. Some need to move on from it, unless they are just oiler fans trying to troll us.

Are people really upset about this deal?
Toffoli played at a 51 point pace over 37 games here.
He got traded mid-season, and had a deep playoff run the year before.
He’s reliably a 45 point 20G forward with pedigree who won two ships with our head coach, and he’s under contract for 2 more years.
He is what he is, and that’s worth the 26th pick in a scattershot draft with no consensus.

Some are suggesting that Mesar or Heineman might never make it to the NHL vs "proven" goal scoring Toffoli so we win that trade based on our current needs at the time of the trade, which they could be correct.
But there's still an argument to be made about trading away currency for a player that didn't help us. Regardless if he would have and could have selected a Mesar or a Lambert, or where Heineman is in his development, those are still assets that we could have used for something more impactful than Toffoli.
|
This is where I stand. I don't mind the trade and Toffoli is a decent player but I think we landed him for nothing. I don't look at the 1st round pick in isolation. It could have been used in a number of ways that could have helped the team longer term. Toffoli is here for a couple years making reasonable contributions but it feels a lot like the Hamonic trade. Luckily with less valuable assets but I see it unfolding very similar.

He’s such a poor skater though. I just don’t think he’s a good fit for the roster.

Why does thread keep getting bumped? I keep thinking there is a trade but it's just people having pointless arguments.
The trade is done. If you want to truly analyze this trade, figure out who got selected with the Flames pick and then come back in a few years once there is more of a conclusion.
Toffoli makes about $4MM and scores about 20 goals a season. That's not too bad and better than a lot of other players.
Besides, when is the last time any Flames first round pick (outside of top 10) has amounted to anything much? Backlund like 15 years ago?
Or you can add maybe Kobasew, Jankowski, and Saprykin (none of these guys were top 6) if you look at the last 30 years.

Speed can be added. Few players around the league have Toffoli’s shot and finish ability.

I did my part, I wasn't posting.
Might have been the draft we just missed on.
Might have also been because when you post, the thread goes to the top of the site (you posted lol).
Might be both.
That part about Flames first round picks, it's valid. I'll give you that. But only when you qualify it with Flames picks. That's a whole other thread. IMHO selling all your picks is not the solution to bad drafting.

Nitpicking, but he won only won once in 2014 with Sutter. He started playing the following season after the 2012 cup.

With Gaudreau leaving, I’m changing my prediction of Toffoli’s 17 goals in 80 games to 12 goals in 80 games. With Gaudreau gone, he’ll be given more minutes on the top line. That basically means more minutes to show everyone how terrible he truly is.
12 goals it is.

I'm starting to think Toffoli isn't your favorite Flame... But it may take a few more posts to be sure

I see. So by playing more minutes and getting a bigger role, he will actually score less?
That there is a weapons-grade plutonium take.

Yes, exactly. Doesn’t make sense right? But that’s how bad he is.

Hmm. You're right, it doesn't make sense. That could mean one of two things:
1. Tyler Toffoli has somehow figured out a way to do the impossible, even though we haven't actually seen it happen yet.
2. You're wrong.
Balance of the evidence would appear to lean strongly toward #2.

71 pages here of people saying they don't care if BT sacrifices our future for the present.
Cool. Now we've given Gaudreau away for free as part of that strategy.
Great strategy
