This sort of thing would be mutual, so I'd guess he has a contract offer from the KHL that he wants to sign that pays better than his minor-league salary with the Flames, and he needs to be free of his NHL contract before he can sign it.

The Flames have loaned him to the KHL in each of the last two seasons, so it doesn't seem like he's in the plans.


With a lot of non-Russian players leaving the KHL due to everything that's happening, there might be a good opportunity for bubble Russian players to go back home.
