I set personal records on all but 1 segment on my southbound ride to Quarry Park this morning. I also do not expect this afternoon to be fun.

Chose a bad day for my first ride to work for the year. Heading North this morning was awful. I might have set personal records for the slowest speeds along most strava segments.
Hopefully wind direction doesn't decide to flip for the ride home.

I decided to get out for a good ride today, and tried to strategically choose a north route outbound, so I was doing the into wind uphills mostly in the first part of the ride, then had more tailwind downhills on the way home.

Other than the wind it was a really nice day though.

So, as you all know I'm shopping for a new helmet. Has anybody seen anything that offers face protection without going to a full BMX helmet? My googling has shown a few people developing them, but haven't found any yet.

I'm still tempted to just wear my hockey helmet, at least that has a full cage.

Downhill helmets? Not super cheap, and going to be hot in the summer. Why do you need full face? I don't know if I'd want to wear a hockey helmet. Besides looking like the "special" person on the pathway, they aren't optimized for the kind of impact cyclists experience. If I had to go full face it would be a mountain bike downhill helmet.

The ER doctor said repeatedly as he was sticking my face that he was glad we did the full CT scan- he wouldn’t have believed the X-rays that my cheek bone wasn’t broken.

In part full face is for the protection, but also to give me some confidence to start riding again once I heal.

Alternatively I was thinking about getting good eye protection like this:

Ah, gotcha, forgot about the crash. I'd just look at full face downhill, there are more expensive ones with more ventilation.

For eye pro, I recommend a couple of Smith products. Both have mil spec ballistic protection.
Goggle: LoPro Regulator
Sunglasses: PivLock Echo

A cheaper alternative to the PivLock is Revision Sawfly. Revision also offers goggles. I have both but Smith has superior optics.

I know they are pricey but I'd look at a helmet with a removable chin guard. So you can eventually remove the chin guard when you are ready. Something like the The Giro Switchblade

I was also going to also suggest a helmet with the removable face guard. My brother has one and they’re pretty slick. Gives you more flexibility in the future to either take it off or put it back on as desired without having 2 helmets

DH/enduro helmets (including the visor part) sticks out quite far on the forehead. Would that work on road bike geometry? Might have to crank your neck up to see forward.


But if that's how you want to transition back, also check fox proframe. best ventilated one imo, with removeable chin too.

Edit: actually chin doesn’t come off. There is a seam so I always thought it did.

I haven't read the thread so not sure if it's been talked about - The new housing development south of 22x along the bow river. I went to bike down there, hoping for a nice long run. It looks like you can only bike to the end of Blue Devil Golf course and then the pathway just ends at the housing development?

So nowhere to pick up again and keep going south along the Bow?

Yeah, I think that's it for now. They're building more communities down there so they'll likely extended it.

When I get to the end I head up Chaparral and over to Silverado/Spruce Meadows.

i have good news for you in that you are wrong. you can ride some singletrack that eventually turns into double track that runs parallel to the river all of the way to highway 2 south.

where that paved bike path turns towards blue devil gc, look for some beaten down grass, it will take ou around that fencepost, then about 100m down the trail take a left over that large pipe and you will find some nice single track, it eventually opens up to double track and an unofficial dog park. so you may have to deal with the occasional dog that wants to follow you. this trail is best ridden on a mountain bike, but is is pretty flat and smooth so a gravel grinder would be fine.

With enough notice, I should be able to fit it in my training schedule, provided it's not on a race weekend or something.
