I have been trying to see if this is allowed. I am going to be building a ground level deck this summer but where I am building it there is a basement window well. I don't want people to fall in the window well obviously so the options are to build a little fence around it or put a grate over it. I want to go with the grate but I cannot find if this is allowed.
It would be built where the grate could open if needed, such as someone needing to escape out the window in an emergency.

I see lots of things from the city and province about the dimensions of the well itself and how the window needs to be able to open and such but nothing about covering the well with a grate or something.
Does anyone have any information if this is allowed?

I am thinking something like this

Does this help?

https://cljohnsonwelding.com/window-...y%20homeowners.

If these guys do it, I assume it's allowed as long as you check regularly that the grate isn't stuck in place so that someone inside would have issues escaping.

You could try Ocean Mechanical, they did mine. I would check to see if your tank has warranty. Can find the info on your sticker.

You probably won't want people standing on that grate anyway. Why not just build a short railing around the well. Put some seating on it, or shelving and have a pseudo ladder built in to get out from the inside. Or put some hinges on one side of the railing so it can open up.

Pretty sure you can grate it as long as it can be freely pushed out from the inside.

Thanks, tank is 15 years old. I had set some time aside today to do some shopping around, as I know I need to replace it, and want to get rid of my chimney. Unfortunately it decided to spring a leak today, so I lost the luxury of time. I just had Benner over, and will be going tankless. Hope it works well...

I'd be curious to know how well tankless works. I've heard some people say it was amazing for 2-3 years in Calgary, and then minerals from the hard water killed it.

He said either use a a water softener, or flush it once a year. I'll flush it.

As long as no special tools are required to open it, it is ok for Alberta Building Code.

Am I wearing belt and suspenders if I do both? Thinking maybe I'll stretch the descaling interval to 18 or 24 mths?

No idea! Probably not the worst idea to flush it occasionally, though he said he's done his once after a few years, and it was totally clear.

Compared to a modern HW tank, you don't actually see much energy savings with a tankless system. They're never used in a non-residential applications.

I think the main usage is space savings. Many people might be able to lie down in their utility room or install a stocked post apocalyptic survival goods rack if they had a tankless in their utility room.

Why would I want to lie down in my utility room?
