Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2020 - Round 4
It's time for the 8th annual Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking, but at a different time of year and certainly at a different time.
First a look back at previous years can be done with this handy link: Previous Results
Once again vote how you want. There are those that vote 100% on potential, some that vote 100% on the likelihood to see an NHL rink, others that apply a mix, some using the value in a trade. Completely up to you.
I'll run one a day until we are done, and then FlamesAddiction wants to do a one off list version to compare the results.
We start with 35 names so this should get us pretty close to a Flames camp.
2020 Results
1. Valimaki - 85%
2. Zary - 62%
3. Pelletier - 74%

Mackey gets my vote this round. High chance to make the nhl, and has the potential to become a top 4

Mackey for me.
I have decided I am unwilling to put a goalie in my top5-7 unless the goalie prospect has shown signs at least at the AHL level. I'm done with getting excited about junior/ncaa success.

Undecided. Going to read some cases made here and make a pick. Now hearing arguments for Gawdin, Phillips, Mackey, Wolf or anyone else.

Wolf. To compare to the lead stats compared to the other leagues last year, where I compare Wolf's stats compared to the highest numbers in the other leagues, not just the best goalie but whatever the highest stat in the league (min. 12 games played)
Wolf: 9 SO, 1.88 GAA, .935 SAV%
OHL: 5 SO, 2.40 GAA, .924SAV%
QMJHL: 6 SO, 2.25 GAA, .925SAV%
So if you took the best stats from each other league and put it into a goalie, they would still be worse than Wolf. There is something to be said for team play, scoring levels, etc, but there is nothing more Wolf could have done this year to prove himself. His ceiling is unlimited, but with goalies who knows if he gets there...but Wolf is the pick here.

Wolf.
He’s already on a better trajectory than Parsons. Here’s to hoping it continues.

I probably should have voted for Wolf, but I've just become very skeptical over goaltending prospects after having voted for Gillies, Parsons, Ortio, etc. in the past.

Just say no to ranking goalie prospects in the top 5. Jon Gillies at 3 one year will forever be an embarrassment.

You people voting Wolf, when will you ever learn?
Highly touted goalie prospect + property of the Flames = guaranteed bust.

Jon Gillies was a third round pick that won a NCAA title and made a US world junior team.
His hip injury derailed his career.
He was never an embarrassment.
These polls reflect the fan base' view of the prospect pool every summer. It's not a guarantee that the top five all go on to be hall of famers. Injuries, personal issues, and just stalled development can make what looked like a solid prospect middling in as little as a year.

What a depressing take.
Different GMs, coaches, eras ... I just don't see the point in not assessing every player for who he is.

Phillips until he's gone.
I would have voted Wolf but goalies are voodoo, so.

This is where it gets interesting. I think cases can be made for Mackey (close to NHL ready), Wolf (great year), Pettersen (progressing well), and Poirier (high ceiling).
Slotting in goalies against skaters is next to impossible, and I think we should actually have a separate list. So, not going with Wolf yet.
I thought about going with Poirier - I think he is going to be a good one - but went with Mackey as I expect he will play some NHL games this season.

Wolf for me. While I hesitate to get excited about a goalie prospect it’s hard to deny his numbers.

Between Wolf, Pettersen, Phillips, and Mackey for me for 4-7. I am really hoping to see Mackey play the year in Calgary next year, and Phillips to get some games in.

Oh I agree 1000%
Some things just stick with this club. Look at the Anaheim curse that spanned over a quarter of this club's existence.
Flames can't develop a goalie. Whether it's bad luck or incompetence, this is our reality as fans. Make no mistake, I'm cheering for him hard, but let's revisit this thread in 5 years.

Phillips too. I tend to think that slots #3 or #4 through #7 are fairly interchangeable, but not because of a want for quality in the top ten. It actually looks like a pretty deep group.

Went with Mackey. Outside of Valimaki, he seems like the next to graduate to the bigs. Team seems very high on him, and he was touted as THE NCAA signing this year.
