Bear, Broberg, Bouchard, Klefbom, Russell looking more and more like their d after next season. Not sure how this crew is bringing them a Stanley cup for a few years. Unless Bouchard really is the next Pronger

Thanks for the great laugh!
Broberg has more of a chance of becoming Lidstrom than Bouchard does Pronger. That's not saying much though.

Mike Smith: It's easy Kris, just tell him you love Edmonton and you're looking to re-sign for one year, no risk.
Kris Russell: Holland will never fall for it.
MS: That's what I thought at first. But it worked!
KR: But what about money?
MS: Say you've been offered $3M, but will take $2M. Hometown discount.
KR: That's ridiculous.
MS: Do it! It'll be better than the KHL, trust me!

Gotta love that part of the decision to sign must have been that he will definitely be exposed in the expansion draft.
Kris Russel signs the closest thing he could to a Must Trade Clause.

I doubt there would be much of a market for him at the deadline, and trading him away would mean needing to find someone else to meet the exposure requirement for the expansion draft.

The Oilers will put Kleifbomb on LTIR and have another $4 million to play with to pay Bear and another defenseman - likely Bouchard and his $1 million paycheque.

He is entering the last year of his contract which has a cap hit and AAV of $4M. I can't imagine his 1 year extension would be for less than that.

How often does a player sign an extension with the same team their current contract is with, but for less than their current contract's AAV? I honestly don't know that answer but it doesn't seem very common.

But like he can just wait on his end? Lets say Oilers offer 1M-1.5M in a year a team could potentially give him 2M plus.

Have you seen their Defence? Kris Russel is at least a more or less NHL player.

Yes, Kris Russell is the only possible expansion fodder on a team where a minus player got a performance bonus for being at the top of that stat line on the team.

Edmonton Oilers @EdmontonOilers
The #Oilers have signed defenceman Kris Russell to a one-year contract extension through the 2021-22 season with an AAV of $1.25 million.
