Unless you actually get to the final, the Paint Pot Trophy is pretty meaningless.

There's no excitement at getting a great money-spinning draw (unlike the FA Cup or League Cup), because the teams are limited to the bottom 2 leagues only.

Very few spectators actually turn up to watch these games as well, so the atmosphere is usually pretty dismal.

We got 3,000 for the game last night, whereas for the league game at the weekend we had over double that (6,500).

Southampton got a measly 8,000 for their game last night, in a stadium that holds 32,000.

Gus Poyet of BHAFC thinks that the Football League should get rid of the JPT. Three cup competitions for the Football League plus 46 game season (League 1) makes for a lot of football for clubs that have limited resources.

Accrington Stanley and player Ray Putterill have been charged by The FA after Putterill appeared in a Johnstone's Paint Trophy match whilst under a County FA suspension.

Putterill appeared for Accrington Stanley in a match against Tranmere Rovers on 31 August. It is alleged that this was a breach of FA rules as the player was under a suspension issued by Liverpool County FA

If Accrington are thrown out of the competition it would open the door for Rovers' reinstatement, who could then face Stockport County at home in the second round.

Couple of stories

Tranmere Rovers defender Ian Goodison has signed a new contract to keep him at the club until the end of the 2011/12 season.
The 37-year-old Jamaica international arrived at Prenton Park in February 2004 and has made 294 appearances.
Manager Les Parry told the club website: "He's someone who has become a firm fans' favourite.
"He is one of the best defenders in League One and it is great news that he will be here for another season."
Goodison, who has been named player of the season in three of the last four years, added: "I'm pleased to have signed the extension. I love playing for Tranmere and have enjoyed the last six years at the club."

Les Parry takes his Tranmere side to Somerset this weekend as Rovers take on Yeovil Town at Huish Park in NPower League One.

The Wirral side will be full of confidence following their first league win of the season last weekend, a 1-0 success over promotion chasing Peterborough United, whilst Rovers' form on the road has also been strong.

Tranmere therefore will be hopeful of picking up another three points in this fixture against a Yeovil side who may well be competing against Rovers to beat the drop to League Two come the end of the season.

Rovers bring Liverpool goalie Peter Gulacsi in on emergency loan:

Injuries to Gunnar Nielsen and Simon Miotto had left Rovers with only one professional goalkeeper, so Gulacsi returns to Prenton Park following his previous spell on loan at the Club last season.
