This made me realize that I miss Maher in the mornings and his "This day in Flames history" bits that he would do from time to time.

^^ An absolute beauty. I grew up idolozing him, but it's still shocking to me to see how small he was compared to the net. That's the first shock, then you realize he's playing stand-up and that's the other one that hits you.

I mean, it's no exaggeration to say Roy changed goaltending forever by being so unbeatable in the butterfly, but you still forget what goaltending looked like back then. Mind you, I think Vernie became more of a hybrid after he went to Detroit...

Wouldn't it be something to see someone like Wolf re-popularize staying on your feet? I mean, I'm not suggesting a style swap for Wolf or anything that crazy... but it would be pretty cool to see a goalie come in and shake things up. I think lots of young goalies trid to emulate Hasek a lot, but that dude has a slinky for a spine. You can't just train to be able to successfully flop around like that (in my mind, anyway). It's really messed up though... cause I re-watch Vernie highlights and I'm like, how did someone that small play on his feet so much and risk all those low shots (the infamous Vernie five-hole)? Then I watch Wolf play nowadays and I'm like how does someone that small go down so early and give up so much of the net?

Maybe the next style change we see is a smaller goalie with two trappers instead of a stick, playing like a footie keeper, lol.

Edit: I just googled to see if it's spelled "footie" or "footy" and in doing so, discovered the term is actually used for Aussie football. Am I the only one that calls soccer "footie/footy?" (I'm fairly certain the answer is no, or else I've made some weird contributions to conversations about a completely different sport.)

Would need a rule change to 11.7: All goalies must use one each of a blocking glove and a catching glove.

I love those opening lines from Duhatshek in that. Nobody likes to see Vancouver Canucks.

My Dad and I coached against Vernon when he was playing Midget hockey in the Max Bell Arena. Mikey played for the Southwest Blues and battled against our team the Cowley and Keith Rangers in the SE. Beat them for the right to go to the provincials for the National Wrigley Tourney. In return they beat us in the City Championship.

Probably the last time in his life anyone called Cam Neely a "non-factor".

I doubt that. He still had to endure 2 more months playing for the Canucks!

Once he got to Boston now, thats a different story.

I have to drag this off topic...

It's really just as simple as

Boston=good
Vancouver=no good

Proven on February 24th, 1987 when the Flames beat the Canucks 2-0 thanks to two first period goals 1:06 apart by Steve Bozek and Joe Mullen. Lemlin stopped all 33 shots from the Cam Neely-less Vancouver Canucks. A team that finished 19th in a 21 team league.

As it turned out trading Neely with their next first round pick for Barry Pederson was just no good. That #3 overall pick ended up being the solid but not spectacular Glen Wesley who went on to play 1457 games as a third overall pick.

Reminds me of that time we traded Sven Baertschi to them for a second round pick…

2015-Mar-02 Traded from Calgary Flames to Vancouver Canucks for round 2 pick in the 2015 draft (Rasmus Andersson)
