Damn, I thought they were all able to be picked up after the game. The Senators policy is the one that makes sense to me.

Yaa, not saying this just because its the Flames, but discarding them for sanitary reasons seems like a pretty sensible approach. There are plenty of other ways in which these sports teams can help out different charities and organizations.

Reclaiming a hat thrown on the ice after a hat trick seems like a cop out. You got to see a hat trick, live and in person, giving up your hat is a worthy trade off.

Not to mention how time consuming it must be to find your hat. Just let it go.

I wish the Flames did a display of all the hats that don't get collected by fans.

It gives the team a much more personal touch and connects with the fans in my opinion. It's a show of appreciation for the fans who threw their personal belongings in a sign of support for a player or the team.

I'm less likely to throw my hat in support if it's just gonna get thrown out.

I like the Minnesota Wild policy of donating new hats equal to the unclaimed hats.

Being owned by Scrooge McDuck, I'm surprised that the Sens don't re-sell them.

I like the Bruins' policy.

Discarding for sanitary reasons should be called what it is - more like simply being cheap or lazy. Cleaning technology exists. The players’ equipment that gets cleaned (more frequently than hat tricks occur, as well) I would venture is far more nasty.

Many are perfectly good hats though, not hard to wash and sanitize them and many homeless and poor people could use them. Throwing them away seems wasteful. Personally I think you should be able to collect your hat at the end of the game, if not claimed they go to charity.

Well, at least the Oilers are still getting use out of Rexall Place.

I have never been at a game where a player recorded a hat trick.

Has anyone on this board ever thrown their hat to celebrate? If so, did you regret doing it when you realize a replacement hat may be as much as $40 and the fact you have to finish the night with hat hair?

I tossed one for Sam Bennett’s against Florida and Michael Cammalleri’s hatty Vs. Buffalo.

I really liked the hat I tossed for the Bennett one, but do I regret it? Nah.

For the Bennett toss, I wasn’t close enough to get it onto the ice but could follow it as people picked it up and chucked it forward until it got onto the ice. The Cammy toss was a straight toss onto the ice.

Flames suck at this. Give them to a goodwill charity, THEY will clean the hats like they do other clothing.

What a cop out.

Basically saying the Flames are too lazy so they just throw them out. It's 21st century for Hockey God's sake, I'm sure there's a way to mass sanitize all of those hats and then donate them.

I wonder if the Oilers have a huge bonfire at the end of the season where they burn all the jerseys that are tossed on the ice. Everybody joins hands and sings kumbiya
