Hope Brouwer does find another NHL contract but I'm not so sure he will. His foot speed and the rest of his game has clearly deteriorated A LOT.
The game seems pretty close to passing him by if it hasn't already.

The contract is paid out at 2/3 of the remaining value. The cap hit of the 2/3 is spread out over double of the years that were bought out.
There is both cap savings and real dollar savings.

Safe to say Backlund will have an "A" for the full season?

The injury he never quite recovered his form from didn't help either obviously.

The really damning thing is that it wasn't even Tkachuk who took the spot, he is a LW. Bouwer was surpassed by Ferland, Frolik and spare parts/replacement-level players.

Which is strange, because he equally fails the eye test as well, having every line he plays on look visibly and noticeably worse off.

Glencross retired at 32 and I think he had more to give than Brouwer does right now. I'd be shocked if he was playing hockey next season.

We'll move onto complaining about Peters/How superior dougie was over noah/Neal not scoring.

The Flames have now moved the top two, three of the top five, and five of the top 11 worse relative corsi players from last season

I actually cant believe it. I have been hoping that this would happen, but never thought it would. I was really worried after Bill Peters first presser on 960, the way that he was talking about how Brouwer will get a chance to step up. Lot of changes in personnel since then, but I definitely thought it was a bad omen at the time.
As for those worried about Brouwer losing his job, don't be ridiculous. Its not like hes going to be going to the food bank or waiting in line to register for unemployment. Hes armed with enough cash to do whatever catches his fancy, if another NHL job is not in the cards.

Good to know.
I'm surprised the NHLPA ever agreed to this, it goes against the concept of guaranteed contracts.

Is this the third contract Treliving has negotiated that he is buying out?
Maybe just par for the course that your team is going to have $1 or $2 million of dead money against the cap every year but a quick perusal of capfriendly seems to show Flames have a bit more than most with $2.4 million next year.

It's safe to say the Flames don't really have a 'bad' contract on the roster now? Gio and Gaudreau have the highest cap hits, and both are well worth it. Gio's might not look so good one day, but his game has yet to hit a real decline.
That's incredibly hard to do for any team. To have each and every contract set at about what the player is worth, and some guys outperforming them. Don't think I've ever seen the Flames in such good shape when comparing cap hit vs value, since the day the cap was implemented.
Honestly the Flames are loooooong overdue for a big breakout season, and there's no reason it can't be this upcoming season when looking at the great value contracts on this team.
