That's good to hear. The fact they were offering a two-year, one-way contract is a significant attempt to build a bridge and keep a guy in the organization.

I can understand why he followed Love though.

Not sure how the Flames look silly in this when they’ve been trying to turn this 6th rounder into an NHLer for 8 years and offered him more term and at least the same pay than the contract he took.

Man, those Flames amirite.

Good for him

Glad to see him gone from the organization though, the ice time and key minutes could be better used. I understand the need to add players to win at the AHL level but those minutes could be better used with players that have NHL upside

No, the way Darryl handled him last year was silly. Although my silly comment was when I had read the tweet as saying "two-way" not "two-year".

But, the Flames fired Darryl and made a pretty significant contract offer for a player who hasn't made the NHL yet...so, Connie tried to repair what Darryl broke, but couldn't. That's just the way things go.

Ryan Huska had him for 3 games, not sure he spent much time with him.

I hope Phillips makes the Caps’ main roster and turns into a useful NHL player. I wish him the absolute best.

Mike Vernon and Tim Hunter say hello.

Yeah, and when Bennett went to another team that put him in a situation to succeed, he didn't impress at all, did he?

... oh wait, you weren't talking about Bennett?

I'm just glad he went to a team I don't dislike. I hope he rips it up. Glad he got the bag, too.

Hope he proves a lot of you wrong. He may end up proving me wrong but I still believe in the player. He's got a lot of room to seize control of a spot in WSH. Great situation for him.

Reached out to Mitch ... I'll let you know if/when I hear back about some of his thoughts on the fit in WSH.

I find it hard to believe the flames offered a 1-way 2 year contract. 2-way I can definitely see… which makes more sense in him wanting and signing a 1-way.

So happy the debate to fit him in the big club lineup here is over and so looking forward to seeing him crack the lineup there in Washington. Still fully believe he will become a regular, opportunity now is his to seize! Go Matty!

Phillips is an easy guy to root for and I get why a lot of people are upset. I also hope he does well in Washington and rips it up.

In my opinion he is a AAAA player, probably not going to be top 9 player in the NHL, but is probably too good for the AHL. I think you will start to see more teams following Seattle’s template of having more skill on the 4th line, so he may get more opportunities.

Not quite correct. Flames first year was 2 way (which you are correct, does not look silly)

Good on Phillips for taking the 1 way this year
