The AHL is testing a new playoff format and speculation is that it could be the guinea pig for a future change in the NHL format as it is often the case that the AHL is the test ground for such things.
I'll let people read it because it is kind convoluted, but basically 23 of the 32 teams will make the playoffs. Some teams will have to play a best of 3 in the first round, followed by preliminary best of 5 rounds, and two best of 7 rounds for the semi-final and final. Plus some teams will get a bye in the first round.
Sounds overly complex, but they probably see how they can make more money by expanding the playoffs.

I'd be ok with the AHL Central/North division format. 5 teams/division. 4th place plays 5th in a play-in round. 1, 2 and 3 get a bye. Winner of the play-in plays top Division seed.

I think it also weird that a team that barely gets in may potentially get more playoff revenue by getting an extra round, and a top team that gets a bye round, misses out on that.

Brutal. They let in enough teams. The NBA has that play-in round and it’s so lame. 16 teams make it. Top half of the league (theoretically). No need to change it.
1 vs 8 is ideal but I honestly don’t mind the divisional format either. They don’t need more teams to make it.
Eventually there won’t even be a regular season. It’ll just be an ever increasing field of play-ins, byes, crossovers, best of 3s, 5s, 7s, etc. All playoffs all the time!

This looks the same as last season. Did they change something recently or did someone in Toronto just wake up today and realize the AHL changed its playoff format a year and a half ago?
