I am excited for any trade where Flames retain some salary to put all these anti retention rumors to bed. If I had to guess the hold up is probably on the value of retention, not the retention itself.

I'd be surprised if the Flames aren't using at least two retention slots at the deadline.

Big difference retaining for the rest of the season vs. multiple years.

As I understand it the hold up is what the Devils are willing to pay for 4-6 million dollars worth of retention. If that is a 3rd round pick I would tell them to pound sand too. That amount of money seems to have a going rate in the NHL of a first round pick. The Leafs paid a first for that, the Flames did as well. I don’t think the Flames have an issue eating money, they have done it a number of times in the past.
