We are far more likely to retain on Hanifin and Tanev than we are on guys with multiple years left.
We also still need to field a team and can't trade everyone. Why would we trade the guy that actually picked us without a massive overpay?

Because he's older, oft-injured and probably wants to be in the playoffs and try to win something.
Its not about him, its not about the Flames, its just life.

All true, and two of those points detract from his value in a trade. But since he won in TB and has a young family I just see the arguments to want to stay put too.
We just have a hard enough time attracting guys to play here, without trading away the guys that do want to be here.

Which is also fine. If he wants to stick around though then he cant command 'Market Rate' because being here provides value to him.

I think you two are talking about different players
Kipper is talking about Coleman and it feels like Locke is talking about Tanev

Oh yeah. I was talking about Tanev. I thought we were talking about trading UFAs.

Retaining on a rental at the deadline likely doesn't change their value much if anything. Retain on Markstrom or Coleman and their value likely drastically changes. When they're both having career years which might not be replicated again, it would make sense to at least get an idea of the returns out there. The team is in a rebuild. Players understand what happens in rebuilds. The same way they have handled Markstrom they could with Coleman if they wanted. I don't think that has any negative impact on how the Flames are viewed. It could very well work out beneficial for both sides.

Retaining on a rental makes the deal doable or not. Teams still have to make the cap work.

All this talk about players not wanting to move because of their young families is such BS. This is a business, man. They gotta do what's best for their short careers, not just what's convenient for their kids/wife.

Coleman’s hit on McDavid will be enshrined in Flames lore in perpetuity. And then as a reluctant fighter he answered the bell and landed the best of the shots in his tilt. He is what everyone wishes they were getting when signing a free agent.

I don't know if doing what is right for your family should be considered BS.

Especially when the difference in deals monetarily is the difference between a mansion and a somewhat bigger mansion. And the chances of winning a cup even with a good team are slim.

Did Goalman get a Gordie Howe Hatrick in last night's BOA? What a game and what a fight!

He and Holloway got 10 minute misconducts with 3 minutes to go to 'cool things down' (Coleman hadn't done anything really)
even at 6-3 I have to admit I was braced for 2 late Oil PPs with Coleman unavailable for no good reason

Holloway was trying to draw him into a second fight with less than two four left, which could have had suspension consequences. The refs finally said enough was enough and gave them both 10 minutes to put that to an end.
Too bad the refs weren't up to dealing with the horsedung when it started with Draisaitl extending his body/lifting his elbow to hit Vladar (who was in the crease) (yes, I know he was bumped by Kylington, but that didn't make him practically jump off the ice and lift his elbow directly toward Vladar) just before the Oilers' first goal. If the officials nip that nonsense in the bud, they don't lose control of the game.

I was a bit confused because he's getting older but I didn't think had significant injuries.
But yes I was talking about Coleman. Good catch we were crossing lines!
