The Texas Stars are the team to beat this season in the Western Conference.

They have FOUR of the top ten scorers in the AHL. Look out for Travis Morin (42GP 27-39-66), Colton Sceviour (45GP 23-32-55), Chris Mueller (46GP 21-22-43) and rookie Curtis McKenzie (47GP 16-27-43).

Fortunately Christopher Nilstorp is not one of the leagues best puck stoppers. He's got a .905%SV and 2.84GGA.

I sense a couple of barn burners. This is going to be a whole new level for Olivier Roy. I know he has some AHL experience, but hopefully he's feeling the groove, because this team is for real.

TGW and the Heat will take advantage of the practice time, and we've got a pretty veteran d-core now to try to shut them down. Should be some awesome games. It's also Country Night, and I believe Pink in the Rink the following game.

Go Heat Go!

To add to what Drury18 & thymebalm have said, I will add info on the season series.

Oct. 20th - Heat 3 @ Stars 9

Notes: Laurent Brossoit made his first career AHL start and Abbotsford was playing their 3rd of 3 games in 3 nights. The Heat led 3-1 until 11:22 of the 2nd period where they completely collapsed and gave up 8 unanswered goals.

Scoresheet:
1. TEX Hedden, (2) , 8:04
1. ABB Wotherspoon, (1) (Jooris), 11:14
1. ABB Nemisz, (2) (Knight, McKelvie), 17:26
2. ABB Billins, (3) (Olson, MacKenzie), 8:23
2. TEX Morin, (7) (Sceviour), 11:22
2. TEX Mueller, (3) (Sceviour, Ritchie), 16:11 (PP)
3. TEX McKenzie, (2) (Mueller, Morin), 2:06 (PP)
3. TEX Sceviour, (3) (McKenzie, Morin), 2:28 (PP)
3. TEX Sceviour, (4) (McKenzie, Mueller), 7:21 (PP)
3. TEX Gaunce, (1) (Jokipakka, Ritchie), 10:50
3. TEX Sceviour, (5) (Morin), 15:54
3. TEX Stransky, (1) (Dowling, Jokipakka), 19:46 (PP)

Nov. 3rd - Heat 7 @ Stars 3

Notes: With Travis Morin and others up with Dallas the Heat sought retribution for the massacre at the hands of the hometown Stars 2 weeks earlier. Abbotsford led 3-0 until 11:02 of the 2nd period, when Texas scored a pair in about three and a half minutes. Shades of October 20th? Heat scared late in the 2nd in take a 4-2 lead but less than 6 minutes into the 3rd they gave up a short handed goal to let the Stars draw within one and everyone was wondering if the collapse was coming. Instead Street responded on the same PP that gave up the shorty to reinstate a 2 goal lead. Knight added an insurance marker, then Jones potted an empty netter to complete his hat-trick and more importantly to complete revenge for the beating laid on them 2 weeks prior.

Scoresheet:
1. ABB Jones, (5) (Billins, Street), 16:01
1. ABB Olson, (3) (Jones, Ferland), 16:38 (PP)
2. ABB Jones, (6) (Billins, Ferland), 4:46 (PP)
2. TEX Glennie, (2) (Sceviour, Mueller), 11:02
2. TEX Sceviour, (12) (Ritchie, Hedden), 14:35 (PP)
2. ABB Street, (4) (Jones, Wotherspoon), 19:43
3. TEX Wathier, (3) , 5:25 (SH)
3. ABB Street, (5) (Knight, Cundari), 5:55 (PP)
3. ABB Knight, (6) (Hanowski), 6:20
3. ABB Jones, (7) (Ferland, Street), 16:59 (EN)

Jan. 10th - Heat 0 @ Stars 5

Notes: Another beating laid on the Heat. Players had begun to be called up to the Flames due to their injuries and Ortio was being given a night off. Joey Mac stood tall and made 38 saves but it wasn't nearly enough as the Heat could not muster any offense at all.

Scoresheet:
1. TEX Ritchie, (7) (Jokipakka), 5:27 (PP)
1. TEX Wathier, (5) , 7:01
1. TEX Dowling, (3) (Hedden, Ritchie), 13:23
3. TEX Ritchie, (8) (Hedden), 2:30
3. TEX Morin, (20) (McKenzie, Fortunus), 10:16 (PP)

Stats:
Sceviour (Tex) 4 G 3 A 7 Points
Ritchie (Tex) 2 G 4 A 6 Points
Morin (Tex) 2 G 3 A 5 Points
Jones (Abb) 3 G 2 A 5 Points
Hedden (Tex) 1 G 3 A 4 Points

Also interesting to note that with Roy starting Saturday it will be the 4th starter in 4 games the Heat have thrown against the Stars.

I hope Roy was been watching tape on Sceviour. If that kid gets going he could singlehandedly win it for the Stars.

Heck of a player. Sort of wish he was a Flames prospect. I watched him take down the Hitmen on a few occasions too when he played in Lethbridge.

I have a feeling the guys are going to be prepared. Watching them play of late, the system never breaks. Everyone always knows where to be, and it's been really effective on the offensive and defensive side. Having Vets like OB and Smith will help Roy out tremendously.

Elsewhere, Byron/Breen scratched again for the Flames today... It'd be nice to have those guys back. Barely room for them. but room enough. I wonder if Breen gets sent down.. I don't think he'll need to clear waivers this time. Byron likely won't be subjected to waivers because its unnecessary with the forward depth to take any risk (however small).

Joni Ortio has been returned from Abbotsford and could get the start tomorrow night.

I was trying to figure out if he could make it tonight but it seems unlikely.

Yeah was checking to see if it's possible he makes it for tonight but it'd be a stretch. Too bad. Should be a real good test for Roy though.

It's just good to know he'll be back for Sunday if need be. Ward was concerned he may not even get in until tomorrow and wouldn't be an option at all this weekend. Now it seems like if Roy performs well tonight, he could very well get the call again tomorrow. However, an off night will put Ortio back in the net for Sunday.

I hope Heemskerk gets one more night in a Heat uni. The guy has great stats, its just a tough world for goaltenders.

I actually found the Flames charter on a flight tracker and they get into Calgary at 7:51pm MST. Pretty sure Joni is on the flight so he wouldn't have made it in time.

I should clarify: I found the charter as I was trying to look up what potential flights were leaving Philly coming into Calgary, Van or Abby that might be in time. Put in Philly and Calgary and it popped up first on the list.

I am not THAT hardcore of a "fan". :-)

Heat going to the PP as Knight was tripped up. However the call against Texas appears to be holding.
