I don't know the inner workings, but there is something strange there. In Alberta (and Southern Alberta) you have very successful university programs for womens rugby, and yet there is a lack of interest for this team?

World Rugby Sevens Series Update Brought to you by HSBC and UCB.

This week:The final event of the season, from Twickenham, the London Sevens!

1st place: Scotland
2nd place: England
3rd place: Canada

Scotland defends their title beating the hosts in the final. It is a good tournament for Canada taking the bronze.

How did Canada do?

Win vs Fiji 22-19
Loss vs NZ 19-14
Win vs Japan 28-14
Win vs Argentina 28-7
Loss vs England 24-5
Win vs USA 22-19

Overall: 3rd place

Canada got off to a great start upsetting Fiji and then coming close against the Kiwis. They took the momentum into day 2 for a third place finish.

2016/2017 Overall Standings

1. South Africa
2. England
3. Fiji
...
8. Canada

That is it for this year's series which was dominated by the South Africans who won half the events. It was a decent year for Canada especially after their slow start and a great improvement from a disappointing 13th place last season.

Agreed the Canadian women are doing great. Unfortunately other than Dubai, Sydney and Vegas, where the tournaments are held at the same time as the Men's, the Women's game receives very little attention and TV coverage.

It looks like the Canadian Women's Sevens in on in Langford this weekend. Hopefully the event receives some attention in Canada.

Speaking of Sevens, New Zealand has officially pulled the plug on Wellington for next year, with the tournament to instead be played in Hamilton. As mentioned earlier in this thread, the Wellington tournament had been declining in popularity due to restrictive liquor laws, higher ticket prices, and poor marketing. I'm sure Hamilton will draw a decent crowd next year if only for the novelty factor, but if they run it the same way Wellington did the last 2-3 years then it's not likely to succeed in the long run. Hopefully the organisers pay attention to what went wrong with Wellington, because that used to be one of the biggest events in that city before the "fun police" ruined it.

Another week of Super Rugby is complete with more Australian losses to New Zealand teams. The Aussies are now 0-20 against the Kiwis.

One positive though is that the 1st place Brumbies have almost caught up to the 5th place Blues being only 5 points back with a game in hand.

That's great, I look forward to the brumbies undeserved playoff spot.

Can you elaborate on that? I thought Australia and NZ followed a mostly European system, not to mention that liquor laws are usually loosened during major sporting events.

Not doing so seems rather short-sighted.

From what I've read and heard, in the last couple of years they've restricted alcohol to certain zones of the stadium, and only a handful of vendors can even sell beer. On top of that the organizers have been vocal about cracking down on public intoxication and have been throwing people out and/or refusing entry to people who appear drunk. They have definitely not been lax on account of it being a big sporting event, at least not lately.

I feel like I don't even know the sport anymore.

Not just an undeserved playoff spot but an undeserved 4th seed and home playoff game. Looking at the remaining schedule I don't think it's possible for the Brumbies to catch the Blues.

Also, the Australia/NZ divide is messing with South Africa. Looking at the standings it is blatantly obvious which conference plays the NZ teams and which conference doesn't.

^Haha the Rebels suck.

They are like the Coyotes of Super Rugby. A team dropped into a Southern market where no one cares about rugby. I won't be losing any sleep after they are likely kicked out of the competition.

Mitch Hunt just hit possibly the most difficult drop goal I have ever seen to give the Crusaders a 25-22 win over the Highlanders. It was another comeback for the Saders who are now 14-0.

The Lions tour got underway tonight with the tourists winning a low scoring affair in Whangarei 13-7 over the provincial Barbarians. It's going to take a much better effort for them to win games against the super rugby sides, never mind the All Blacks.

Agreed the Lions will need to be better to stand a chance against the Super Rugby teams and the All Blacks however I wouldn't read too much into an exhibition match to kick off the tour.

Speaking of the Kiwi Super Rugby teams they are now 23-0 against Australian teams this year after the Blues, Chiefs, and Hurricanes wins over the Reds, Waratahs and Force. My Reds were the closest to ending the streak leading the Blues in Samoa in the 74th minute.
