Wow, would have never guessed that Giordano has a shot at getting second most games played with the Flames this season. Like I probably would have said another 4 or 5 years if asked. Just seemed like Regehr was around for a lot longer than Giordano has been. Guess more indicative of my own aging and how fast years go by now...

Is Gio the 2nd best D-man in Flames history?

Also, I believe, this is for the Calgary Flames only, not the franchise totals (I.E. Atlanta). So players like Chouinard and Reinhart who played for the Atlanta Flames as well are missing from the top 10.

IMO, Yes. MacInnis is clearly #1 and it will take a generational talent to displace him. But in terms of tenure, production, leadership etc. Gio is obviously #2 all time.

I think you could make the case for anyone of Suter (Stanley Cup in 1989, 4x All-Star, including the All-Star team in 1988), Regehr (Stanley Cup in 2004, Won Gold with the Canadian World Cup of Hockey team, was an Olympian in 2006, 2nd most games by the Flames) and maybe even Reinhart despite his back problems. Housley is excluded because his best seasons were away from the Flames.

Right you are ...
List blended has Chouinard 7th in points, Vail 9th and Reinhart 10th

I’m putting Gio at #5 on that list right now. You have to factor playoff success in there somewhere don’t you?

Gary Suter 617 games 565 pts as a Flames along with 49 playoff games was a default player for Team USA.
Rienhardt 75 playoff games with the Flames.
Macoun 85 Flame playoff games
Reghr 827 games 41 playoff games. Olympic team , world cup of hockey.
Gio has not ever had any recognition as a top d-man by Olympic selection or year end all star selection. The most significant recognition was a distance 6th place vote total in for the James Patrick award.
He needs a couple (at least one) of playoff runs where he is a difference maker to be considered an all time great.

I don't know where to rank them but Reinhart is underrated by many posters here (because they didn't see him play). Suter was probably the most talented defenceman physically.

Regehr put his time in with the Flames and was an absolute soldier, but I'm not sure he has much on Giordano other than playoff success (If you want to call it that).

Reg was a physical beast. And IIRC he was given the task of checking Jagr in his prime by Team Canada at the World Cup, and did so quite well. That's how well he could play.

Players like MacInnis, Suter, Reinhart were great defenceman on great teams. Giordano is a good defenceman on an ok team. Housley was a good defenceman on a pretty bad team.
I miss Regehr in his prime.

Thread title was confusing to me - I think we are talking about all time roster milestones.

Canada selecting Dan Hamhuis over him was a joke, and PK Subban was stapled to the bench that whole tournament. Gio should have been there and probably would have if not for the ankle injury that he had just recovered from.

Suter was injured for both the 1986 (only 10 GP) and 1989 (5 GP) playoff runs. Hard to fault him for it, but thought it was worth mentioning...

It's crazy how many games Monahan has already played for us. It feels like yesterday that he was drafted. He's almost the same age as me, God I'm getting old.
