does this mean all the safeways will re-install Self-Express lanes? That and distance played a huge part in why I started going to Sobeys over Safeway.

Has anyone ever won that? Man, that $1M provision booked to their balance sheet must have sat there since the dawn of time.

Safeway > Sobeys > ... Superstore / Co-op / Save-On just don't have the same quality.

I'm pretty sure they buy insurance for that.

Safeway had the highest prices when compared to other grocers so it makes no difference to me as to what they do. Haven't shopped there in many years.
Superstore is the only place to by groceries

Between Costco and Superstore this doens't effect me at all. Sobeys is utter garbage. It's too bad for people who frequen Safeway though; that was a good grocer by comparison.

Can't stand Superstore. Too busy, too crazy, too messy at times.
Safeway is always a little more priced (though it varies and usually good deals week-to-week) but it is always the cleanest and always the most well stocked of the chains.

Are you sure? Why wouldn't it just be treated like a promotional expense? $1M isn't all that much to a corporation of that size. Their marketing budget for the year should be many times more than that.

I'm sure insurance is pretty cheap considering the Flames may never score 5 goals in one game again let alone one player. haha. I can't remember where i read that they had insurance.
Besides it's not even a million bucks. It's a $1million annuity.

Insuring a million dollar payout is still cheaper than a million dollar payout.

A company I worked for did a similar $1 million dollar thing, and it was a type of insurance. No reason to have a $1 million promotional expense when you can have a much smaller promotional expense.
Though a big company might just carry the liability, since if no one wins it doesn't cost anything whereas insurance will still cost if no one wins.

The one in Seton has the building exterior up and siding around 80% of it. It is supposed to open sometime this year I believe.

Exactly. You won't catch me dead in a Superstore. I would rather shop for groceries at 7-Eleven.
The wife and I shop pretty much exclusively at Safeway. This news sucks big time.

Nope. Just can't stand the layout or the clientele. It's just an annoying store to shop at.

Disappointed. After having worked at both stores as a teen (Safeway was my first job and had a blast working as a bag boy chatting up all the cute cashiers) I can safely say Sobey's is complete crap compared to Safeway. Safeway has a waaay better bakery, produce, and meat selection. I also find the deli to be better tasting at Safeway. Sobey's is the biggest dump next to Superstore. I always found Safeway to be kind of classy for a supermarket. The workers union, having all employees (at least when I worked there) wear white shirts, tie, and black pants, having an abundance of staff, better lay out, starbucks built in, etc. Sad day for sure!

I love shopping at Sobeys, if only because there are usually only about 2 other customers in the store.
