Doesn't make it right either. Nor does it help to create respectful discussion.

That's the thing with Girlysports, she has no balls.

Even if you are right, so what? It's a rough world, there's tons of people who disagree with everything that anyone thinks is right, and they're going to have dastardly discussions about it even if you don't like it.

You're welcome to not participate.

I heard that some religious people actually believe the Earth is less than 10,000 years old, lol.

There is a huge difference between imposing one's views and explaining them.

For example, an individual could take a position like, "I am personally opposed to abortion, and will explain my position to anyone who will listen and also choose not to associate with or respect anyone who chooses to have one. But I will not attempt to prevent anyone from getting one."

This would be a fairly hard-lined, but ultimately 'live-and-let-live' philosophy.

Likewise, if someone tells Girly Sports they are a moderate Christian and she explains to them why she thinks that is ultimately a ridiculous thing to believe, and that she doesn't respect their religion, she's not imposing her religious views on them. Depending on the situation, it could be rude, but that's all it is.

If those of us who view religion as a negative start becoming activist to outlaw religion, or to eliminate the right to speak about it, or prevent people from finding or purchasing information about it, NOW we're imposing our views. Or if we were to start requiring preachers to explain the errors of logic, or the contradictions that exist in their holy texts, that would be an imposition.

Honestly, who cares? Girly has her convictions, so do I and so do you. When someone takes offense to an opposing stance, it's ultimately grounded in their own insecurities.

Nope totally agree, but such is life.

Sometimes people want respectful discussion.

Sometimes I just want to sit around with my wife and irrationally and disrespectfully complain about my boss to work off some steam.

Why is my opinion crap?
This is where I stand but the entire thread can move any other direction. It's an open forum. But I have to start with a premise and a position.

Should I have posted just one line?

"Discuss."

My opinion is that the basis of religion is pretty moronic - there is someone who created man and woman...until evolution is widely accepted and then that was his plan all along. Sort of seems stupid doesn't it... then there is the part of the guy building a big ass boat and saving the planet, parting the red sea, a message directly from god... the big book is filled with crap like that.

If someone can point out an actual miracle that can't be explained by anything other than divine intervention I would be shocked.

It sounds closer to you having hurt feelings more than anything else... not everyone has to agree or even respect your opinion, just your right to have your opinion... look at scientology, I think it is hilariously stupid garbage that is designed to separate people from their money for the sake of the "church" if you want to believe in Xenu, go for it, as long as no one is hurt pray to whoever makes you feel randy about god.

I have no desire to debate this or take any sides, but its always struck me as amusing that some atheists can still be 'holier than'.

Nowhere in the text you quoted does Girlysports state that she would like to see any religion outlawed or religious practices/beliefs banned by the state. Even if she chooses to express a negative opinion of those who believe in a supernatural god, she's not in any way attempting to coerce anyone to conform to her convictions.

That's an opinion, and one that was only stated. She didn't tell you or anyone else you had to live by it, believe it, or turn it into a hula skirt and fly it to Hawaii for dance lessons.

I haven't any use for religion. I think they all suck ass, LOL. But believe what you want or don't want, I don't care. *shrug*

What?

It's kind of like that i don't believe that gravity sucks people away from the planet, I would feel foolish to even bring it up in conversation. No point in bringing up nonsense if it isn't important to you because it isn't a topic that should make it into your thoughts.
