LOL. Hitch has coached Tocchet, Verbeek, Hextall, Modano, Belfour, Lehtinen, Roenick, Backes, etc. All of those guys have competitive play.

I agree with the assessment of some on Katz and his treatment of Chiarelli so far. How has Chia been given such a long leash? Katz must have made smart decisions to build his empire, and now he is running that organization like a clown college. Nothing about Chia's track record screams second chances should be given.

He almost signed with the Flames, but decided to go to San Jose instead.

Amonte, Nolan, and Reonick? We'd have been unstoppable in NHL 96.

There can many books but one main character, and that the egotistical Lowe. All of the Oilers problems since he took over from Sather as GM are a product of his extreme arrogance about his abilities and his thought of his standing in the hockey world.
From claiming to be a Robin Hood for all NHL GMs is forcing Comrie's second contract down, to starting the toxic reputation of the organization by lying to Pronger about the other help he was going to have. From alienating GMs too with his offer sheet talk for Vanek and Penner. Agents and players further with his treatment of Smyth and Souray. The meddling with day to day stuff. With his coaching hires, the pioneer mentality of the two headed monster in Quinn and Renney, the shiny new school philolsophy toy that everyone coveted in Eakins and fired a great coach he had via the Internet. All of that created a toxic environment that no player wanted to go to and agents advised against going. Heatly, Nylander, all public in rejecting going to the Oilers with Lowe. Many others not so public.
Everything Lowe did was trying to emulate Sather, who let his players do whatever, no structure outside of listening to him. But it's not 1982, and those lassiez faire techniques in player development don't work in the 2000s, nor do players react the same, with the money fame and pressures involved.
But he didn't have anyone to hold him accountable. 30 different owners before Fanboy Katz bought the team. And he has a gift of gab, cuddling up to media to be able to do his dirty work. Smooth tounge in lying to players and agents (ask Perron, Cole, Pronger and others). Only players going there wanted a lat pay day or got hoodwinked by Lowe or got drafted.
Then overpayment of players to convince players to go there, or, after the SC run, put the team in cap he'll. Or hurt like Khaibhulin.
He got pushed in the shadows for the last few years in a moment of clarify from Katz, but has bided his time and built his ego back up, and weaseld his way back into Katz's confidence to start slowly undermining the guy who has taken his job.
He's successfuly created the coup now. The new GM and President of Hockey Ops in Chia had a tough environment to attract players thanks to Lowe, had limited cap space thanks to Lowe. Chia and McLellan finally started to build something up and got the team to 2 rounds and that killed Lowe. When the team faltered the year after the playoff run (thanks to the hole Lowe put them in) , a frustrated Katz had a trusted voice in Lowe to advise him, and the undermining began, of which Chia had no chance given Lowe's reach with the media in that city and the above mentioned franchise rep, cap problems and lack of proper player devlopment which left morale as low as possible and that of a broken team.
And now he's going to be back, pulling the strings from afar like he did for so many years, with puppet Gm's and coaches.

So Oilers to give an undeserving goaltender a starting salary contract only for him to lay an egg in his next game. All three goals of the soft variety. Every-time they make a move in their minds to improve the team it backfires.

It might be the leaguewide contract, on every teams but one...

More from Rob
They canned a head coach, the GM is on the firing line, they're 12th in the West and just lost at home to the last place team in the NHL.
And (I am not making this up) statistically this is the Edmonton Oilers fourth best season in the last 13 years.

How much of an overpayment is the Koskinen contract?

The Flames have 71 points at the All-Star break.
That's better than 5 of the last 10 Oilers full season point totals

I wonder if they have a banner unveiling ceremony for that.
