I'm actually quite surprised they can manage a .500 record with that roster. But I guess that's mainly due to the jump start that usually happens with a coaching change.
If I was the Oilers brass, I would be ripping his head off. "Look man, you let down a bunch of fans by not coming, we were ok with covering for you with the whole "he's sick excuse". And then you're seen driving around town
You know what makes it worse, that the whole team went out and played a lazy uninpired game.
Blame Chia all you want, and he deserves the blame, but man that core is gutless.

I get that these guys have lives. But this is a bad look for a Skills Comp day, the day for the fans/kids, and you’re the only beacon of happiness they have this season.
But at least stay indoors if you’re gonna bail...
Leave it to a team like the Oilers to find a way to let their fans down at a Skills Comp day.
Am I the only one then who has been sick but still left my house? Maybe he was going for soup or something.
Common sense says that if you call in sick to work, you should not leave your house and be seen in public. Even if you are sick the optics are terrible.

Optics are bad yes. But he’s a professional athlete if they are giving him the time off it’s to rest. I like to harp on the Oilers as much as the next guy but just cause he was seen driving it’s not an indicator of anything. He could of been driving to Shoppers to pick up cold meds for all we know.

I get what you're saying, but at the same time when you know that an event like that is happening that day and you've taken it off, it might be an appropriate time to send your girlfriend out for a soup run medicine.
People who are constantly in the media need to be more cognizant of perception.
We were spoiled with stories of Iginla holding up the team bus until all autographs were signed. In Edmonton, a culture of entitlement has become the venom for which there is no antidote...
Anyhow...
What I mainly wanted to say is that I’m doing pretty well on the ol’ twitter machine lately...

The Flames are (obviously) my far-and-away favourite team, however, I try to follow Long Island as well. (It's a direct result of their early-80s results against the Oilers...but I also loved John Tonelli as a kid, so, that's a holdover...)
Anyway, I bring this up because, looking at the current NHL standings tonight, the Islanders are in the first Wild Card spot in the East, with game(s) in hand on teams both ahead of and behind them. Nothing is guaranteed, but they have set themselves up to be competitive down the stretch.
One has to ask: "How is it that the Islanders, having lost Tavares, are solidly in the playoff race this season?" I can't help but think that the additions of Trotz and Lamoriello have made solid impacts on the organization and the team's overall performance.
The point here is that even the Isles--in many ways the Oilers of the East for the past 15 or so years--have finally made organizational changes that seem to have righted the ship, at least enough to make the team competitive for playoffs.
And still, the Oilers are mired in E = NG mediocrity, hiring and firing coaches at will, while retaining a GM who is clearly out of his element.
What's my overall point? Chia-Den-Freude, mainly. And to hope that the Oil misery continues for decades to come.

He's a giant fish in a small pond, being perhaps the biggest hockey star in the world playing for a heavily struggling Edmonton Oilers team. He's not held to the same standards as everyone else. If he gets a day off for being sick he should know a million times better than to go out in public, driving around in his car, especially when him being away from the rink means so much disappointmet for so many young hockey fans as it did this time. There is really no excuse for him for being so stupid. But knowing the Oilers, I assume noone from management will tell him a damn thing about it.
Looks like the tweet showing McDavid out and about has been taken down. The Oilers way obviously to go after the guy who put the spotlight on the issue instead of ripping into McDavid. Disgusting, like everything else related to the Oilers.
