I thought Gallant was going to land there, honestly.

Columbus could use a rebuild.

1. He's probably cheap
2. He'll be learning on the job as a first time head coach

Perfect coaching hire for a tankathon that can perhaps be there long-term.

Davidson recently did an inteview talking about wanting to attract and keep talent. Not sure promoting the good cop to head coach helps with either

After Torts, you pretty much have to go with the cop. Why would that not help with the players? Many of them like to be comfortable with their coaches.

I like the hire for the Jackets. It’ll be a learning curve, but what better way to do it than with the 2022 and 2023 drafts coming up?

If there aren’t results by 2024, then Columbus can move to another HC that has a better resume.

Ive always had a soft spot for the Jackets. Couldn't tell you why. It's just too bad they've never been able to find consistent success. After their first round sweep against Tampa Bay there was so much emotion coming out of that city. They just can't retain talent for the life of them. Hoping this guy does well as the fans deserve it.

Wow, lots of unemployed NHL former head coaches available:
Tortorella
Babcock
Boudreau
Gallant
Bylsma
Yeo
Carlyle

I am sure I'm missing some...

Frankly, I'd be shocked to see Carlyle ever coach again.

I thought it was a bit of an open secret that he was going to Seattle? Am I mis-remembering that?

NYR interviewed him before the Worlds. Got permission from Vegas to do so.

A few years back I had my uncle's seats 7 rows behind and to the side of the Jackets bench.

It was noticeable how much this Larsen guy chatted up and engaged with the players when they came back to the bench and coached them up. Torts only stepped in when he laid the hammer down or for chatting the guys you could tell he likes (Hartnell as he was captain).

This was in the stoic GG era so the dicotomy comparing the energy on the benches was painfully obvious.

Doesn't mean what his abilities as a head coach will be but Torts trusted him back then with his players.

Found my post from that PGT.

Things aren't always the same of course, but quite often the "good guy" assistant coaches have trouble when they're promoted to the head coach role in the same organization - it's a different dichotomy and relationship with the players.

But it looks like Columbus is on the downswing right now, so maybe they feel might as well give him a shot.

Davidson said attracting and retaining talent. Guys on the fence already there just sat through Torts and now get the assistant. Doesn't always work well for that style of promotion. They might not want to stay through what may be a soft rebuild or retool.

UFAs likely want to play for a winner in a desirable market. Columbus isn't either right now. A top tier coach can help swing the decision. Doesn't hurt in keeping interest higher in the local team either.

As for good cop, I guess every coach after Torts is the good cop but I would have found one from a different precinct.

Gallant already coached the BJ's, and while it's possible, it's highly unlikely that he would return.

Its about time. I think there needs to be a push for coaches not stuck in the 90s and 2000s style of hockey.

Am I crazy to think Torts would have been good for this team?

He would demand a lot more out of core guys, not sure if he and chucky would get along.
