I doubt it. I think it will be more of a "win and you're in" scenario, in which Peters will try to keep both goalies motivated by making the loss of the next start the consequence for losing a game. After all, with no back to back games in the playoffs, there's no need for more than one goaltender unless one falters.

What about Rittich’s win vs Columbus? He didn’t start the next game nor the game after. It doesn’t look like a win and you’re in to me. It looks very strategic. I feel like Peters and Sigalet are looking at optimal matchups and past historical performance and etc.

Say what you will about the start of this season, But ever since February Smith has turned his season around. I think that he can leave the Flames organisation with his head held high, and deserves some respect for his ability to recover.

Still hoping Rittich lands the #1 job for the playoffs but it's getting hard to ignore Smth's play of late.
Code:
Player # Last 5 Last 10 Last 15 Last 20 QS%
Smith 38 0.915 0.922 0.917 0.905 47%
Rittich 42 0.920 0.895 0.896 0.898 62%
.922 in his last ten is pretty damn impressive.

Smith starting the playoffs at home terrifies me because he is one bad save away from getting boo'ed at all times now at the dome.
This team is definitely doomed if smith is our starter in the playoffs, He WILL cost us a game or two with bad goals, thats just what he does, and we just have to hope they don't occur in critical moments.
That said it is nice to see him recovering a little bit

Any save is a good save in my opinion.

I don't know if anyone has captured this but:
2018-2019 is the first year in Flames history that they have two goalies with 20+ Wins.
All other numbers aside, that's an impressive feat.

The amount of disdain that some posters have for Mike Smith is absurd.
I personally want David Rittich to get the start when the playoffs begin, but part of me hopes that it's Smith and that he goes on a long and impressive run just to see the resulting apoplexy from his detractors here.

My favorite between the two Flames goalies is indeed Rittich. At the end of the day, I don't care who gets the nod. I'd like to see Rittich, but I'd rather see Flames victories in June.

I've been saying it since June. I haven't changed my opinion that no team in the NHL is going on a deep playoff run with Mike Smith as their starter.
it would be funny if it happened, and I would be cheering as loud as the next guy, but the chances of it happening are minimal at best.
He likely doesn't get a contract in the nhl next year barring some miraculous run in the playoffs

I think it is still quite misleading to ignore the meat and potatoes of the last 10 Smith starts.
Smith has started games against bottom dwelling offensive teams (let's say bottom 10 in GF) 7 of those 10 games. A paltry 2 of his last 10 starts have been logged against a high-end offensive team (let's say top 10 in GF).
Take that for what it's worth, but there is a clear path of evidence that suggests although he's settled down compared to the dumpster fire that was the first 4 months of the season, he's still struggling to stop pucks against teams that generate above average offensive volume. The vast majority of the 'good' has been coming against anemic opposition that our elite team is completely shutting down.
This is not something that excites me about the prospects of him starting playoff games against what will likely be above average offensive teams.

Not as wide as you think.

What a roller coaster goaltending can be, and usually is.
I would have never thought it a month or two ago, but if Smith continues to get results now and into the playoffs, I can certainly see a scenario where the Flames re-sign him on a one year bonus laden 35+ contract this summer to continue platooning with Rittich until Big Save Dave takes the net as the starter for good.
Not sure how I feel about that, but if he is a big part of a long and successful playoff run I'm sure I'd be just fine with it.
Reminds of two years ago when the majority of the board (myself included) were really wanting to see Elliot re-signed immediately around about this time of the season because he was absolutely on fire, and then he laid a totally rotten egg in the playoffs and we were thanking Treliving for being patient on that decision.

I have more faith in the Saddledome fans than you, I guess. While the leash for 41 should be short, I trust Peters make any change at the appropriate time.
We should not be booing our starter in the playoffs unless he does something catastrophically stupid, and even then we probably shouldn't.
