A developer is proposing a new Midtown development in Fairview off Macleod near Chinook mall and wants to build a new LRT station between Heritage and Chinook.

Building a station between Heritage and Chinook would be surpassingly stupid. It would make those the closest three stations in the network outside of downtown, in what is not a particularly built-up part of the city. Sounds like this is just a marketing tactic by the developer.

Initially I agreed with this, but quickly checked track length, and Stampede Earlton is 700m and this new station would be 900m.

Other 900m stations:
SAIT to Lions Park
University to Brentwood
Shaganappi to Westbrook

There may be a few others, that's just what I checked.

Whether or not the stations are too close is almost besides the point. What a terrible location for that type of development. Zero access on 3 sides and only 1 intersection to exit WB or SB - 71st/Macleod is the only full intersection and you want to congest that with 6,000 res unit, a hotel, and 400k sqft of commercial/office? Ha. There is a reason they'd need a dedicated ctrain station. Literally every soul who works or lives there training in/out is the only way this flies on paper from a movements perspective.

Horrible idea

Here's my Sim-City solution:

Level crossing connecting Fisher Rd and Flint Pl

MUP corridor running parrallel on the east side of the train tracks between Chinook and Heritage stations (it's already a narrow green corridor, just needs a chain link fence and some more trees to not suck)

It's kind of funny to click on the 'bicycling' layer on google maps...you have to zoom pretty far our from this proposed development to find any green lines.

A pedestrian crossing (or two) over Macleod would also go a long way to making this area remotely 'livable'. It's close to a lot of great stuff, but walking to any of it would be really unpleasant.

Once all of the above is done and it's fully built out, there might be a case for a new station.

I worked in that part of the city for years, and it’s pretty grim for walking or cycling. The problem is 61st is the only level crossing of the train tracks for a couple km, and both it and Centre Street are far from bicycle friendly.

Vancouver (well, Richmond) is getting an infill station, and there's another one on the horizon. It could very well happen in Calgary. And yeah it wouldn't be justified under current density. But the point is that density would be increased.

Yeah, we can probably get TODs around existing stations before we go building a new station with a TOD around it. Particularly one so isolated from everything including the adjacent neighborhood.

Can we actually though? The land assembly is done, and the isolation makes this area rather NIMBY-proof.

Is this a version of McIver / the UCP reneging on their commitment?

Cute. It's like the UCP just for fun wants to see how low they can drop their polling numbers in both major cities before the next election.

Do they realize that the Green Line runs through seats they need to win in the next election?

Green Line LRT construction delayed until at least 2022

Quote:
The City of Calgary has announced construction on the Green Line LRT project will be delayed until at least 2022.

The first stage of the light-rail transit line was supposed to start construction this summer on the southeast section — from the Elbow River near Inglewood to Shepard station — as well as create thousands of jobs.

The project is the largest in Calgary's history, with a potential price tag of $5.5 billion; however, it has now been delayed due to a dispute over a provincial funding agreement.
Because this government really loves to play with fire. Banking on the civic election to be PC friendly so they can just kill the project I'm sure.

No, McIvor is pro Green Line and committed to funding it, he just has concerns that he can't tell you so he can't do it now.

CT and UCalgary piloting an electronic version of the UPass.
A little odd to be doing this when learning is remote and nobody is on campus however.

Seems to be the perfect time to do a pilot though - if they totally mess it up, its unlikely to impact a large number of people. Gives a lot of breathing room and the ability to fix an issues before everyone starts using it.

Are transit tickets "forever" now? I got a few free ones after the covid shot, and they didn't have a dollar value listed.

Not sure which of the many threads this could go in, but today was the groundbreaking for the redevelopment of the Victoria Park Stampede C-Train station and the 17th Avenue & Macleod Trail intersection.

https://twitter.com/user/status/1418269675171971072

When fully completed in 2024, this will completely change the pedestrian, transit, and vehicle interactions with Stampede Park in the area. The C-Train station will be entirely at surface level and you'll be able to drive on 17th Ave directly into Stampede Park. 2024 is also when the BMO Centre expansion and new arena (fingers crossed) are scheduled to open.

This will be good. Stampede Park has always lacked access points, and the existing station is inadequate and long past its prime. I am looking forward to wider, more spacious platforms and the elimination of the ramps and the great urine spiral.
